Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

Wanted to try RC8 to see whether my issue with Instant Guard is resolved... ...but my testing platform is the RT-AC86U, and that firmware still seems to be missing.

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

Thanks LimJK. I would have thought that IPSec and OpenVPN were able to function side-by-side, unless there is some sort of h/w restriction. I‘m still hopeful. I‘ve confirmed that there is no issue with the Astrill VPN Router applet, and suspect that Instant Guard „steals“ the TUN device...

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

I can appreciate that. Instant Guard appears as a separate tab, not under VPN Server settings. I was hoping that it might be a special portal into the router, rather than just a standard VPN Server config. Because Asus is the manufacturer, that should have been possible.

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

Further Update: Merlin 386.1 alpha2 displaying same behaviour as stock RC7. When a VPN Client on the router has an active session, not able to establish a connection with Instant Guard 1.0.9 Can't test it with Astrill VPN Router applet at the moment. Latest version not working on 386 codebase

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

Yes, I know. I’ve been using Merlin for at least 6 years. My setup is complicated further by the Astrill VPN Router applet which could introduce further complications.

    [Thread-1] [ 386.1_Alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

Any other Astrill VPN Router applet users having trouble with 386.1 alpha2? Up until this morning, it was fine. Applet v2.9.33 was working fine. But then, in the middle of the night or this morning, it auto-updated to v2.9.34 and now I get the following log entry: Wed Nov 11 01:03:46 2020...

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

@NSNE What you are trying to do works for me. @ASUSWRT_2020 Thanks for the new Instant Guard version. The results are interesting. I‘m running the 386_40577 Release on an AC-86U. My previous problem still exists (unable to establish a connection with IG when a VPN client session is active)...

Brilliant! The two belong together. Appreciate your effort.

Only as ATA - got it. Then it’s worth a shot.

Exactly. You’re on cable and have a cable modem - which presumably has an Ethernet socket. Could be that the Telstra “smart” modem just handles the authentication. However, your Asus router might be able to do that too.

Merlin firmware for the new RT-AX86U?

If your Fibre doesn’t go through a PON, best to do SFP+ handoff directly into a switch - and plug your devices / routers into the switch. Then you might be able to take advantage of the routers out there offering 2.5G WAN ports.

Merlin firmware for the new RT-AX86U?

We had it in Singapore 5 years ago. I could have really used a 2.5G WAN port back in those days.

Have you checked your region / country settings under WiFi Professional? Even though your username betrays German-speaking origins, you might not be in Europe, or be aware of this setting. It controls which channels are allowed in your area.

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

Thanks for taking a look at this for me. Just FYI: I also run Merlin on another router, and use the Astrill VPN Applet on that router (AX88U). I thought that might make a difference, since I am not using a VPN Client profile. Unfortunately, when the Applet has an established connection to a...

    [Thread-1] [ 386.1_Alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

Glad I wasn‘t first out of the blocks this time. Installed 386.1 A2 over 384.19, and not even WiFi is coming up on my AX88U. Cycled power twice, no difference. Time for the Reset button. EDIT: Both WiFi LEDs are on, but no SSIDs detectable. Even the RESET Button has no effect. Going to go for...

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

After updating to ASUS Router App 1.5.83, I can now seamlessly configure the router remotely from a mobile / cellular device. However, the restriction of not being able to establish an Instant Guard connection to the router when a OpenVPN client session is active, still exists.

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

Thanks LimJK. Haha, kids at home - school holidays right? (We are in the same city) Maybe it will be possible when Merlin releases his 386 build. I still have Merlin 384.19 on my main router. Very happy with stock 386 firmware on other one for now.

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

As I said, I need to have a permanent OpenVPN client session running 24/7 on the router. If I’m out, I would like to be able configure the router remotely by using Instant Guard to “dial-in” Just wondering if this is possible.
  19. P

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

Yes, that is my question - whether it’s possible to have an OpenVPN client session in place on the router... ...as well as be able to “dial-in” to configure the router from a mobile device when not at home. On this router in question, AC-86U, I have a permanent VPN tunnel to France. If I have...

Beta ASUS Instant Guard iOS/Android public beta

@LimJK Please try establishing an Instant Guard connection when your router has an active OpenVPN client session running. For me, it's impossible. I'd be interested to know if this is a hardware restriction, eg. not possible with certain models Or whether it affects all ASUS Routers.
