    [Dev] Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 development

But there is no challenge in buying stronger hardware to do the job (with the extra horsepower to handle whatever additional work you ask it to do). It just works.

    System Log

I do not need to see status messages from processes that are working as intended. Warnings and errors get buried in the flood of useless messages. I use warning/warning for my syslog settings which eliminates all of the nonsense. Disclaimer - I do not use any of the add-on scripts, some of...

    Release ASUS RT-AX86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.386_49447 (2022/06/20)

One sets the log level for the firmware. The other determines which log messages gets stored in syslog. Not sure which is responsible for what without some experimentation.

    Release ASUS RT-AX86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.386_49447 (2022/06/20)

My apologies. I did not consider that Merlin may have added features to allow for changing the level of logging via the GUI. I believe there are NVRAM commands one can use to change the log levels. nvram set message_loglevel=4 nvram set log_level=4 nvram commit

    Release ASUS RT-AX86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.386_49447 (2022/06/20)

No commands. System Log, General Log, Default message log level - warning and Log only messages more urgent than - warning.

    Release ASUS RT-AX86U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.386_49447 (2022/06/20)

The standard syslog settings should hide that nonsense, but the standard settings are set to allow far too much logging. I use warning/warning and have very few messages appear in syslog. If there is a problem, I can increase the verbosity to see all the useless messages and hopefully, the...

Looking for usb interface wireless network card recommendation

Every "hi-performance" USB dongle I have tried in the past has always been a disappointment. The cheap ones on the other hand, seem to work fine. Just my experience...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.7 Beta is now available

This criticism is directed toward Asus, not you, RMerlin. With regard to RH7 or Windows, they have far greater resources (CPU, RAM, storage) to exploit than does a simple Asus router. Having a simple check box for enable/disable debug logging would be a considerate thing to do for the customer.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.7 Beta is now available

Agreed. Releasing a compiled blob to the public with diagnostic logging enabled is obnoxious and sloppy.

Voxel Custom firmware build for R7800 v. 1.0.2.95SF

Sometimes, the firmware upload page refreshes during the install, but after the upload, and takes me to a default Netgear webpage. I just patiently wait for about 3 minutes to find the firmware upgrade has successfully completed. Just mentioning this as a quirky thing that can happen...

    [ 386.7 alpha Build(s) ] Testing available build(s)

I think the RT-AC3100 and RT-AC5300 are just lower priority than any of the RT-AX models. There is nothing wrong with my RT-AC3100, but the RT-AX86U is a very good upgrade.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.5 is now available

If you don't have another RT-AC86U for comparison, it is difficult to know if the firmware is causing problems or you have failing hardware. These routers are consumer grade electronics made as cheaply as possible.

News Trend Micro: Cyclops Blink Sets Sights on Asus Routers

Per the advisory from BOTH Watchguard and Asus for this situation, the configuration by Jaime Alvarez is "perfect" for not allowing remote administration to the device and using a VPN tunnel as a secure method of remote access. I am not extending the qualifier of "perfect" to anything else. Just...

News Trend Micro: Cyclops Blink Sets Sights on Asus Routers

Ripped from the Watchguard website: Based on our own investigation, an investigation conducted jointly with Mandiant, and information provided by the FBI, WatchGuard has concluded the following: Based on current estimates, Cyclops Blink may have affected approximately 1% of active WatchGuard...

News Trend Micro: Cyclops Blink Sets Sights on Asus Routers

A quick read of the Asus advisory implies having Remote Management enabled is how the exploit can occur. The average user is not going into Advanced settings to enable Remote Management, I hope. If you never enable Remote Management, the version of Asus firmware does not matter. This exploit...
