    I had a slowly dying router drive me nuts for months. The only indication I had of a problem was dropped packets, occasionally. Other than having a known working spare for comparison, which is how I finally figured out the problem, subtle hardware problems can be annoying.

    Both my Netgear R7800 and Asus RT-AC3100 work as well as expected, but both use third party firmware (Voxel for R7800 and Merlin for RT-AC3100). I do prefer the R7800, though.

    Voxel gets ZERO cooperation from Netgear. He has stated that Netgear is actually hostile toward him and his efforts. I don't know if it matters that Netgear outsources their firmware development (Delta Networks) as compared to Asus which does it internally.

    I think you have bad hardware. Any unusual behavior like this after a reset to factory defaults is not good.

    It should not matter. However, if things don't seem to be working correctly, definitely reset the router and re-configure manually. If the problems continue, you may have bad hardware.
