Voxel Custom firmware build for R7800 v. 1.0.2.79SF

Question: Why would you want to run this after each reboot? Unless I'm missing something, it looks like the changes would persist across reboots. Also, in the traffic_meter line, I think the order of the stop and chmod commands should be swapped.

    R7800 Temperature

Looks like you are correct. As a quick test, I stood my router vertically on the front edge for a bit, and the temps dropped by a few degrees compared to when it was sitting horizontally. 51 50 49 48 50 51 50 49 50 49 53

I’ve done research but I’m at a bump. R7800 SQM

Just a shot in the dark here, but is your modem DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1? I recently read that 3.1 can help reduce bufferbloat. https://superuser.com/questions/1161874/is-there-a-reason-to-get-docsis-3-1-cable-modem-for-ones-house

Kamoj Kamoj Add-on 5.1 Beta testing poll

Here's the method I use to install the addon: 1. Download the addon to my Windows PC 2. Run a tftp server on my PC, for example tftpd32: https://tftpd32.jounin.net/ 3. Point tftp server to folder where addon was downloaded 4. Telnet into router 5. Change into temporary folder: $ cd /tmp 6...

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

I believe there are only 2 types of physical memory in a typical router: - RAM (or DRAM): This is the run-time memory used by the CPU, similar to RAM in a PC. This storage is not persistent, contents are lost when power is removed. Read and writes are very fast. RAM memory does not wear out due...

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

Great work @kamoj! Do you know what actions cause the erase counters to be reset? Since your erase counters are pretty low, I'm guessing that they have been reset at some point.

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

Another tidbit of background into is that the filesystems used in flash memory, such as ubifs, include a feature called "wear leveling" which spreads writes across the flash memory device to help extend the lifespan. Frequently written files such as traffic monitor data are not always getting...

    R7800 Return to Stock

Anyone know what the "Revert to factory default settings" option in the web UI does? Is it just the equivalent of "nvram default"?

    R7800 list of known devices?

Context: The "Attached Devices" screen allows you to enter names and device types for all attached devices. I have named all my devices there, and would like to save a copy of that info on my PC. Question: Does anyone know how to access that info for all known devices, including devices that...

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

Thanks Kamoj. In the addon code, I see that it is just managing the nokwilt option in nvram (as documented in Voxel's readme). BTW, I like that the code includes forum links. Nice!

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

Thanks Voxel. Hipplay? I don't see that in the readme. Wow, that's interesting. Not a good idea to leave it enabled for long periods of time then. Is it possible to redirect that data to /tmp?

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

Thanks Kamoj. My R7800 was purchased in July 2019 from Amazon, not a refurb. The protime option seems to be recognized but returns unprintable characters FF FF FF FF (in hex).

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

Of course, but that doesn't answer my question. To rephrase it, what distinguishes a "New" device from an "Old" one?

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

Thanks kamoj. I have a R7800 purchased in July 2019, and it returns an empty response to that command. Does "New" mean more a recent date of manufacture, or does it mean the device has never been factory reset?

[R7800] Will no longer save settings after reboot.

This is just a shot in the dark, but frequent writes to flash memory can cause the memory to fail after a while. Are there any logs or other frequently-written files that are stored in flash on this router? It looks like /var is linked to /tmp, so most logs are in temporary storage. Don't know...

Looking for a replacement for Asus RT-N66U

The Asus RT-86U and Netgear R7800 are both under $200 and are often recommended around here. Since firmware updates are important to you . . . If you go Asus, then pick something that is supported by Merlin. https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/about If you go Netgear, then pick something that is...

    Custom firmware build for R7800 v. 1.0.2.74.4SF

Voxel has said in the past that he prefers to keep the add-on separate from the firmware (i.e. not bundled). I think this makes sense because it allows him to remain focused on the core firmware, and isolates the firmware and add-on in terms of release schedule, support, etc. It might be cool...

    Custom firmware build for R7800 v. 1.0.2.74.4SF

I also installed 1.0.2.74.4SF on a "virgin" R7800 (i.e. factory reset after install, then setup manually). Have done several reboots and haven't had any issue with losing settings.

    Disable WPS on R7800

Thanks Kamoj. I don't use WPS, so I was just hoping to "disable" it so it doesn't do anything. Was kinda hoping there might be a nvram setting. I see these values in nvram, but don't know what they do: nvram show | grep wps wps_pin_attack_check=1 wps_status=5 endis_wla_wps=1 wps=xxxxxxxxxx...
