    I managed to download the firmware from http://h10144.www1.hp.com/customercare/support/software/summarypages/p-j1810-c.htm However when I updated the firmware and rebooted the switch the interface still shows software version P.1.14 and not P.1.17. Do you think I have a faulty switch?

    Nope if your modem/router gigabit already. However, if the switch has QOS, traffic prioritisation, link aggregation, Green switching, jumbo frames etc then it us best connecting everthing to the switch to monitor and get best performace as these features are generally lacking in modem/routers...
