    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.22068

I also had mine set to auto and never had any problems. That one update that bricked some AX86U routers scared me. It actually upgraded just fine on my router but I realized that there was a risk which I hadn't recognized before. Since I didn't really see any harm in waiting a few days until I...

"Best" new router that supports Merlin?

Maybe so but hopefully you can get something that'll run reliably at decent speeds for at least a few years without losing security updates support. That was my goal when I bought my AX86U.

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.22068

There's an "Auto Firmware Upgrade" setting under Administration / Firmware Upgrade. Mine is set to off so it won't automatically upgrade. If yours it's set to on then it would. I did upgrade to the latest firmware with no issues so far. My ISP doesn't use credentials so I can't speak from...

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.22068

I sure would've swapped you yesterday. It was 16 below 0 yesterday with wind chill warnings of down to 55 below 0. All fahrenheit of course.

Just updated. Everything seems fine so far. GUI seems fine, responds quickly...

    RT AC68U and windows 11

So if you turn off dhcp on the windows 10 pc then move out to Windows 11. At that point, dhcp is off and the windows 11 pc interface won't get an IP address assigned by the router. Unless both the router and the connected PC network interfaces have an IP address on the same subnet, they won't...

Thanks. I was implying that but didn't come out and say it.

    RT AC68U and windows 11

I don't recall if Asus routers default to dhcp being enabled. But I thought that they weren't. If I'm wrong then then perhaps the interface would just pick up an appropriate 192.168.1.0/24 IPv4 address from dhcp.

    RT AC68U and windows 11

To access your router on IP address 192.168.1.1 from your attached Windows computer or laptop, I believe that interface connected to the router needs to be configured with another valid IP address on subnet 192.168.1.0/24 . Is it?

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21709

I always figured that the mystery of the AX86U bricking 3.0.0.4.386.48377 firmware would come out someday. But maybe not. Nearly seems consigned to the trash bin of history at this point. It was automatically loaded on my router and didn't brick it. But I can't help but be a little curious. FYI...

    TP-Link WiFi 6 router advice

I've still got one of those. I can't tell you why.

    TP-Link WiFi 6 router advice

Yeah. I think TP-Link routers are a great value. Just relatively light on features and firmware updates. So I wouldn't buy one as long as I can afford better.

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21709

Might be a good idea to go through this exercise myself at some point. Everything is working well but I didn't keep a record of what I changed from defaults when I first set it up. So recording the current settings then resetting to defaults would give me a baseline and I could generate a record...

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21709

OK that makes sense. WPA2-Personal is what I'm using also.

    TP-Link WiFi 6 router advice

It could be that an AC86U may have outperformed an AX86U in my environment as well. But I chose to go for the newer product for several reasons - reported heating issues, WiFi 6 support, likely longer product support life. And it turned out to be a substantial upgrade that did what I wanted it...

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21709

You're not using any wireless security? Or am I reading that wrong?

    TP-Link WiFi 6 router advice

All that might be true. I bought an AX86U and it's the first router I've ever had that provides a reliable fast 5GHz signal throughout my entire house. It's the best router I've owned. Maybe not perfect but I'm happy with it

    TP-Link WiFi 6 router advice

AX50 yes. But the article also states "The TP-Link Archer AX55 will be our new top pick in an upcoming rewrite of this guide." Just FYI...
