Slow and Unresponisve Transfers Using SMB2

I don't know the reason. Maybe it's just a bug, a buffer, no idea. The smbd process uses one core at 100% with the SMBDv2 in the AC66_B1. I've just replicated the test again with the same results. The first test I did with 384.4 and Windows 10 1709. Today I've done with 384.5 beta 2 and...

Slow and Unresponisve Transfers Using SMB2

It was just a guess since SMB v2 is safer but way slower (at least in the AC68/AC66_B1) I tend to think is due to some kind of crypt/algorithm which is bad supported by certain SoCs/compilers/kits. Like those SSSE3 or AvX extensions which you can't find in chips which are more than 5-6 years...

Slow and Unresponisve Transfers Using SMB2

Sorry to say this, but way more than 10%. In my experience speed is reduced about 80%. Probably due to some AES crypt or something similar not supported (or bad optimized) in ARM7 / 32bits ark.

    About non_root users

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that utility. Granted I'll take a look at it as soon as I get the time to test it.

    About non_root users

How have you configured the scripts, config files, etc... to make those daemons to run as "nobody" ? It would help me a lot in my tests... Thanks in advance!

WiFi question for AC86U gurus (it’s hard!)

You can disable the WiFi at all. Or only the 5ghz (or the 2.4ghz ) and setting the wifi power to minimum. Not sure if you can even let only the 11b available with WPA2/AES, to minimize the WiFi footprint in your environment while keeping security. Those settings are available in the config...

    About non_root users

That's exactly my concern. My configs don't allow any wan access but for the downloaders (those torrent ports). If only could be easy to have an "entware" user, group or something like that, I'd feel a bit more comfortable. Sure a few utilities and services still could need to run as root but...

    About non_root users

Thanks for the answer. I just took a look and there are another non-interactive user defined like tor and nobody. That's why I asked. In any case I'll probably take a look to the light-httpd option starting by modifying a transmission or amuled skin to add a few options. EDIT: You are right...

    About non_root users

Not a single answer ? Maybe I don't need those non_root users. In fact I'm looking for some kind of "mini httpd" with a simple interface… like AMTM for terminal but web, to start/stop samba, minidlna, transmission, etc... So those could be invoked by non-admin users.

    About non_root users

I'm finishing some of my configs in the router and I have successfully installed and configured several entware apps. Now I'm wondering if it could be a good idea to add users for those apps in order to avoid security issues and to, eventually, allow interactive (ssh) connections to perform...

Switching to SSD for decreasing power cosumption

Certainly you can try it once you are aware of possible issues. And even from time to time perform a full image backup and restore with a disk image tool from Windows through a sata port to "refresh" degraded performance. It should work.

Switching to SSD for decreasing power cosumption

A SSD in a modern system with trim support gives the longest possible lifespan. However in an embedded Linux system with an ext2-3-4 filesystem with no trim that lifespan will be way shorter, but no way to make a serious guess.

Switching to SSD for decreasing power cosumption

With limited resources you must choose among the lesser evil. If you can get more stability at the cost of losing a bit of reliability when crash happens maybe is enough for media files. I personally disabled partially to "unstress" HDD operations. 'tune2fs -o journal_data_writeback /dev/sda1'...

Switching to SSD for decreasing power cosumption

I personally see these routers, as the AC68, as great "low cost" domestic servers for nothing really important to be accessed by 2-3 clients at peaks: Multimedia, small files, family pictures, ocassional sharing, etc... Obviously you'll need a copy or a backup in another device. More than...

Switching to SSD for decreasing power cosumption

You can try using ext2 or ext4 without journaling. Ext4 "by default" is a bit too stressing for disks which lots of writing operations.

Switching to SSD for decreasing power cosumption

I totally understand your point about power consumption just genuinely curious about the numbers you've made to take that decision.

Switching to SSD for decreasing power cosumption

A 3.5 enclosure with independent power supply and a classic HDD could be a good solution. Those usually spin down after a bunch of minutes. And even the firmware has a feature to force that spin down.

    [Release 384/NG] Asuswrt-Merlin 384.4 is now available

Just leave SMBv1 as the only available protocol, reboot and test.

    [Release 384/NG] Asuswrt-Merlin 384.4 is now available

Nothing really broken with 384.4 in my AC66_B1 after a week, just to point out an few issues: - SMBv2 just kills the router performance. It's about 4-5 times slower than SMBv1 over WiFi (didn't test over Ethernet since that isn't my use case). I had to force SMBv1 only. - When indexing/sharing...

    About optware, entware and entware-ng

I see. It seems a clear route to start with. I'll give it a try. Thanks.
