Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

anybody with telnet/ssh access to a non asus router, try one of the following; strings /dev/mtd0ro | grep ccode or strings /dev/mtd/0ro | grep ccode one of them should work. see how locallized competing routers really are.

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

i just checked ccode on the cfe on my e2000 and my e2500 and both were set for 0. of course, i have ddwrt on the e2000 and tomato on the e2500, but the bootloader on both shouldn't have changed afaik. (both bought in te US)

Optimal Settings for 150/10 Mbps over Wifi in a Multi storey house

that's the general idea, yes, but no guarantees i'm afraid. like i said, shop from somewhere with a good return policy. this stuff takes a bit of trial and error

Optimal Settings for 150/10 Mbps over Wifi in a Multi storey house

powerline utilizes your power outlets instead of dedicated wires. these are probably less reliable than both a wireless bridge or moca as they are dependent on the circuits in your house. you could try it and find there's no connection between the outlet by your router and the outlet used on...

Optimal Settings for 150/10 Mbps over Wifi in a Multi storey house

moca would use the existing coaxial normally used for cable tv. no tv required :p (i completely forgot about moca as an option.) another suggestion, find somewhere with a liberal return policy and try any of the above, between a newer revision moca or powerline set or a router as a bridge.

Optimal Settings for 150/10 Mbps over Wifi in a Multi storey house

i can't speak for wireless adapters, but a router as a bridge i've found to be very reliable. to do this with a second n66u would involve going to the Administration page and setting the router to 'Media bridge' and having it connect to your AP accordingly. very easy

Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules

concur. this isn't something that only affects asus. everybody that sells wifi will have to conform one way or another. asus is just first out the door probably because they were most recently sued by netgear. jumping ship to about any other manufacturer is just likely to leave you with a...

Optimal Settings for 150/10 Mbps over Wifi in a Multi storey house

if powerline ethernet isn't an option and neither is running cat5/6 outside of the house, you're best option is to use a second router as a wireless bridge and wire the 3rd floor machine to that

    Wan to Lan filter?

the problem with this is the rule won't persist across reboots. with asuswrt-merlin, there's various scripts and config overrides you can use, stored in JFFS. JFFS can be enabled for the official firmware, but it's only used as a storage location for logging, etc.

    External Hard Drive issues

try enabling the wins server and set as master browser, then adding the router's LAN ip to the WINS field on the LAN dhcp page.

    RT-AC87R reboot issue Merlin release

it sounds like the drive spun itself down and the router freaked out. do you have manual spindown settings applied? i'd consider pulling the drive for a day and see if it happens again. i'd also consider using a small usb2 thumbdrive for the traffic logging and such

    Wan to Lan filter?

So, i understand where you are coming from, but do know that this isn't remotely a foolproof method of security, even when filtering by MAC addresses. if you still desire this, it can be done if you install asuswrt-merlin. you will need to format/enable JFFS. then you simply add the following...

AC68U - How to setup USB sharing?

assuming you only want to share files and such, ntfs will work just fine. do this from the USB Apps > server center > samba page while on the samba page, i'd enable the wins server and set as master browser, then add the router's lan ip to the wins section under the LAN page if you are...

Need some advice for a new router

true, however in my tests i was using the tuxera driver for ntfs/hfs which was giving me the same performance as ext3, ext4 and both with journaling disabled. i found the tuxera driver to bring the filesystem performance to essentially native levels; i was impressed. that said, i'd still, of...

Preventing wired device from accessing LAN devices (Guest mode for Wired)

you could use robocfg to move a physical port to another vlan, use vconfig to create the vlan sub/virtual interface, then use brctl to keep it bridged, then use ebtables to filter access between the new vlan and the rest of the bridge.
