Asus ZenWifi AX XT8 - A two week technical review (And that 160mhz issue)

After 4 weeks of testing, I had to return both units, as good as it is, I could not justify this kind of money for a high speed mesh system with no high speed mesh. In the beta thread Asus seems to have written of 5ghz backhaul as too troublesome, so I will wait for wifi6e on these units. Such...

Is Wi-Fi 6E really going to be here soon?

Well on the Asus beta thread they said 5ghz 160mhz is too difficult and sounds like they have abandoned it. In fact I chose to return my XT8s because of that statement and risk they would not fix the backhaul issue by enabling 80+80 or shifting backhaul to channels 36-64. I think 6E will be...

    GT-AXE11000 hits the FCC

991mw on 6E. That'll be good. I had to return ZenWifi AX (XT8) as 160mhz wasn't available to me for the backhaul making it a useless mesh system. So looking forward to ZenWifi AXE (hopefully with 2.5gb LAN and link aggregation on LAN)

    RT-AX86U 2.5G Port Compatibility

Have you checked the port to see if it even offers 2.5gb? Try turning it from auto negotiation to manual. Might need to SSH.

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

I've given up on my XT8s and sending back tomorrow. The 5ghz backhaul being limited to 1gbps due to radar (No 80+80 or 36-64) and not able to use the 2.5gb for ethernet backhaul all smacks of ASUS software restricting the hardware to make the gaming routers more appealing. Such a shame as the...

Random crashes ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8) & NTP/logging weirdness

Tbf I'm on last day of 30 day returns. And after last comment from ASUSWRT_2020 in the beta thread, looks like they've given up on the 5ghz backhaul already. Which I think makes it not fit for purpose...

Random crashes ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8) & NTP/logging weirdness

I have the XT8's they do need some work to justify their price. The do seem software restricted in a few areas too (5ghz channel restrictions, 2.5gb wan only, no link aggregation on lan just to name a few) Check channel usage for devices dropping off network and some devices like amazon ones...

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

Someone else had the same issue. My Dots work ok but tbh not checked if they were on 2.4 or 5 as share same SSID. Might be worth checking the channel they are on as firesticks don't like the DFS channels.

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

**Bug report** Latest Beta Firmware 39485 OpenVPN server setup. Tried setting up Openvpn server copying my existing certificates. Copy and pasted certificate text including behining and end text. Kept complaining about CA key. Read about copy and paste with carriage return causing issues so...

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

Expanding on that, given the free real estate to the left and right of the UI. Would be nice to have widgets so you could pin your most important stats and they appear on every page. I.E. Node status (backhaul speed) Last 10 entries in Wireless Log Wan up/down status and wan on/off. Internet...

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

I enabled it for backhaul and saw a slight decrease in throughput. Remember when you change a wifi setting like that you trigger DFS to scan channels.that means a 1 min wait on 5ghz. If it detects radar it disables that channel for 31 mins and forces a channel change which then means router and...

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

Interestingly I factory formatted my node, set it up as a router and it connected back to guest account without me even setting up guest.

ZenWifi AX No 160mhz for backhaul

Do a reboot then check wireless log for temporarily unavailable channels. Very frustrating that one of the major features are not available and simple workarounds such as 80+80 or selecting 36-64 are not available. Currently I'm doing a partial workaround but limited to 2882.3Mb for some...

ZenWifi AX No 160mhz for backhaul

Yup, I did a review of it here https://www.snbforums.com/threads/asus-zenwifi-ax-xt8-a-two-week-technical-review-and-that-160mhz-issue.65851/ I've asked in the beta thread if they can allow G2 to broadcast on 36-64. Fingers crossed. Otherwise garbage.

Beta ASUSWRT 386 RC2 public beta with full functions AiMesh 2.0

@ASUSWRT_2020 Is it possible for the XT8 to use 80+80 with a firmware update? Or does the hardware mean this is not possible? Can 36-64 be made available to the backhaul with a firmware update? Thanks

Asus ZenWifi XT8 slower than my AC68U :(

Do you have any other client devices? Macbooks do have issues. Make sure its connecting to 5ghz and not 2.4ghz. (Seperate SSIDs) Check what channels it is using. Try 40mhz rather than 80mhz bandwidth. Do you have VPN installed? I've heard that can interfere too.

    RT-AX88U Router + ZenWifi XT8 Nodes?

Wired or wireless backhaul? Wired is limited to 1gb between XT8s. Wireless 160mhz is very flaky and impossible if you live near a weather radar limiting you to 2.4gbps backhaul. Fronthaul is limited to 1.2gb but you can connect to backhaul for 2.4gb.
