Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

It depends on how snarky I'm feeling at the moment - I actually just looked at the commit history, and I have zero idea anymore why I did that. There's a reason my nick on github is cynicastic. Cynical and Sarcastic. Honestly if I could change my nick here without losing my history, I would...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

Okay, 2.4.3 is up. Please update Entware first, syslog-ng has been update to 3.27. Just minor stuff that's been accumulating: scribe itself has only cosmetic changes, no changes in functionality Filters (w/logrotate files) for Netdata, roaming assistant and Suricata added; h/t to @ttgapers...

Suricata Suricata - IDS on AsusWRT Merlin

Yeah, I need to push out 2.4.3 There's enough little stuff now. Nothing big though.

    Memory Usage at 97%

There is no "easy fix to memory usage" because there is quite literally nothing wrong. Assuming you have a swap file on that external hdd, which I'm guessing you do since (somewhat paradoxically) "used" memory goes down when you remove it, there's no problem at all with having 97% memory...

Right, it is an error message from amtm. I check both the output of 'cru l' and for the cru line in post-mount in scribe's status check. I'm confident his scribe is installed correctly, I'm not sure where the error message is coming from.

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

The last thing the scribe install routine does is run a status, which checks the output of 'cru l' for the presence of the cron job. According to the text file @hshah attached, it was there and everything else was correct. scribe should have exited with "exit 0". I haven't explicitly tried...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

The scribe log says scribe installed successfully, so that should be okay. @Jack Yaz this looks like an unexpected interaction between uiScribe and amtm? I'm up to my eyeballs in alligators for a while so I really don't have the bandwidth to test.

    Asus/Merlin Script Tutorial

I use a wide variety of Unix-like operating systems, and vi is always installed. I don't need to install Entware to use vi, it's in the firmware (it's possible nano may be as well, I've never looked). No matter what Unix-like OS I use, vi is there. Sure, vi doesn't have all the bells and...

I guess that's what I get for not looking at my logs very often. You are correct, thanks.

PDOOMA (Pulled Directly Out Of My A**), I'm gonna guess the raw memory number is the total amount, including whatever is swapped out, and the % is how much of the actual memory in the router it is using. But, PDOOMA, so I could easily be completely wrong.

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

There seems to be a correlation between some of the Trend Micro stuff and the dcd_tainted crashes. I haven't had any since May 11th. Not sure what I changed then. The disk check log is not related to scribe, however, the disk check script only runs when the router reboots, so if you haven't...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

LOL, couldn't let it go. Found it, I was looking in the wrong place. Proved the old adage that if something exists in two places, it will be wrong in one of them. In this case the version in /opt/share/syslog-ng/examples was correct, but the one that is initially installed in...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

Okay, that is really weird. Like, I have no clue how that could possibly be weird. The last update to that file was December 18th (https://github.com/cynicastic/scribe/blob/master/syslog-ng.share/wlceventd), which was before 2.4.1 was released. I'm not even going to try to figure it out.

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

Huh, that's weird. My AC86U that is my main router is not doing that, it's leaving wlceventd as the program. If you didn't set it up to send logs to the main node, then I don't think it will on its own. Also, I just looked, I pushed the change that I showed above back in December (I had...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

errormsg doesn't have a logrotate config because it's kind of a special case, errormsg is a log that should always be blank. If it has entries, there is a problem that needs to be fixed. I dunno, maybe I should have created one for that. There's also no logrotate for expandlog because that...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

No, it doesn't pick up pre-defined defaults, BUT some logs that live there shouldn't be touched by logrotate, particularly any skynet logs (skynet-0, skynet.log, & skynet_events.log). In general, if you write your own syslog-ng filter, there needs to be a corresponding logrotate config. Any...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

I'm guessing RT-AC88U-BC40 is an AiMesh node and you're directing its logs to your main router? The problem is that for some reason, the program name gets changed from "wlceventd" to "syslog". It appears to only happen to the wlceventd log entries, I've no idea why. I've been accumulating a...

Scribe scribe - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

I don't know anything about that router but I'd guess that it simply doesn't have the wlceventd daemon, so it doesn't create any log entries. The file won't exist until something is written to it. Might be unique to 801.11ac routers.

Anyone itching to get the new AX88 just for more power to run scripts?

If you want to do scripting for non-router related tasks, or run a fileserver on the absolute cheapest hardware, get yourself a $35 Raspberry Pi 4 with 1 Gb of memory and go to town. SSH into the RPi is no different from SSH into the router, you can set it up without ever connecting a monitor...

Anyone itching to get the new AX88 just for more power to run scripts?

I really wish ASUS had ported AiMesh to the 3200, it would have made a really good mesh node, I think. I suppose it can still make a decent access point if you can hard wire it. Right now mine is being used as a very expensive 4-port switch. :-(
