Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

Yeah, except I'm in an audit all day long at work tomorrow (Wednesday). Ugh! And there is a good chance I won't have time tomorrow after work due to granddaughter related obligations. Sorry, y'all don't rate anywhere near our granddaughter! :-P Your only chance is if she goes home early...

Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

If you were unlucky enough to grab 3.0_1 when it was up DO NOT use the rs command! Get 3.0_2. This is why we don't do things late at night. ... and I'm no closer to figuring out my logic error. SAD!

Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

Okay, it's "fixed" by an ugly method that has a major problem, but at least it all works through scribe. The problem is that if someone directly calls the init.d script to restart syslog-ng, it will cause the same problem as before, the files will be all messed up. As long as syslog-ng is...

This logic problem is kicking my butt. Reverted the change (it may have made my router crash).

If you're still up, please update scribe again and then try 'rs' I'm not sure it's fixed, I can't test the logic. No no no, don't. Arrrgh.

Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

Okay, that's what I expected, but deepens the logic mystery. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Got another one, with syslog-ng running, what is the output of "ls -al /opt/var/run"?

So, until I stomp this bug (hopefully tonight) then don't use 'rs' by itself; stop FIRST with 'st', then use 'rs' to get it going again.

Would you please try stopping syslog-ng and logrotate with "st", then starting them with "rs" and see if it still throws the same error? It'll help nail down where the problem is.

Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

stopping "st" syslog-ng and logrotate, then restarting "rs" them I think might work as well, and not require a reboot.

No, that's exactly what I was looking for. So, that's no bueno, they're directories. :-( Well, at least that helps me find the logic error.

Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

Okay, if you get that error, and then exit scribe, are /jffs/syslog.log and /jffs/syslog.log-1 directories or links? If they are links then it's not a big deal other than being annoying (I'll fix it either way). If they are directories then it will affect some logging.

Not sure it would be a problem on reboot. If the logic error is in the restart code it might be okay. It'll be some hours before I'm home from work and can look at it, I'm in California.

Phooey. Clearly a logic error there somewhere. I'll have to hunt around tonight after work (U.S. west coast time).

Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

OH. Well I might take the auto-install code out then and update the README with that bit of information. Didn't know a cause had been nailed down. Thanks!

Heh, I honestly don't know either. The only model I specifically search for in the code is the AC86, since as far as I can know, it's the only model that throws tons of "DCD Tainted" errors, so I add a filter for those for the AC86. The hope is that nobody will need to know which models are...

    Scribe Scribe 2.4.4 is out

Decided to roll it all the way to 3.0_0. See announcement here: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/scribe-3-0_0-syslog-ng-and-logrotate-installer.84720/ If you participated the gamma test, you don't have to revert the branch name change in the code, just update scribe and it will go back to the...

    Scribe Scribe 2.4.4 is out

Hopefully tomorrow evening. JGrana was out of town this weekend, and said he'd test it Monday. Since I don't have a router that puts syslog.log in /jffs, I'm a bit reluctant to just say "looks good from my house" and hope for the best. If JGrana gives it a thumbs up, then the gamma version...

Scribe scribe 3.x_y - syslog-ng and logrotate installer

scribe v3.2_0 2023-06-11 scribe is a script that installs syslog-ng and logrotate from Entware. Filters for various common logs are included, and logrotate files to manage those logs. NOTE WELL: Looking at log files to "see if anything is wrong" is counter-productive. Log files are best used...

    Scribe Scribe 2.4.4 is out

You're welcome. And thanks for your patience. As I've said before, my main purpose in writing scribe was actually to dive into shell scripting, and I've learned a ton along the way. I honestly had no altruistic intent of "helping people", lol. I specifically don't want donations for scribe...
