    My newb understanding is all router applets (curl, sendmail etc) are hardcoded to exit the WAN, but I could be wrong on that. You may have to look at using IPTABLES and potentially masquerade the SMTP port to the tunnel... just spit balling This might up @ColinTaylor alley to answer

    Are you trying to use sendmail from the router CLI itself? ie. not a client of the router? So you want Emails sent from the router to be seen by GMail from your client VPN address?

    True enough, I guess just from a user ease of experience point of view OpenVPN on AsusWRT-Merlin is a guided experience vs generating SSH keys could be considered more cumbersome for those who are networking novices.

    Do you factory reset on updates or no? First steps would be to see if the file matches what the router is looking for What is the setting on Tools-Other Settings What is the filename on USB in that location? Is anything populated in the MAC Clone block under Admin If nothing in the box...
