Time Machine Backup -- Rough Start

That's what I think I've been doing. I type smb://[diskname]:local and am presented with an option of which share to connect to. The problem is that if I want to connect to the other share (on a different physical drive) I get an error message: "There was a problem connecting to...

Time Machine Backup -- Rough Start

I have two physical drives and for testing purposes have created a shared folder on each of the drives. I am able to log into either of them just fine. The problem arises when I wish to log into both of them. The only work around I've figured out is to log into one of them as afp and the...

    Logging onto Multiple Volumes

Here's some additional info. As stevech suggests, I am trying to mount two separate shares. I cannot mount the second one. Under the afp url, I can log in once, but am not allowed to a second time. I just here an error sound. If I log in under smb, I have the option of selecting either of...

    Logging onto Multiple Volumes

Yes, I've logged on by connecting to the server. Each of my volumes has different credentials. I was able to "game it" by logging on to one volume via smb and one by afp. That just seems a little clunky. My gut tells me there must be a better way, but I haven't found it yet.

    Logging onto Multiple Volumes

I have two physical drives(volumes) in my NAS configuration and I am able to login and figured out how to mount one volume on startup. However, with two different volumes, I haven't figured out how to mount them both. I'm using the following command to connect to the server...

Time Machine Backup -- Rough Start

Mike, Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what I'm trying to do. Yes, the DAS Time Machine backup folder would not copy over. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong. I believe there is a way to access old Time Machine files; I'll need to research that. Second question. I have...

Time Machine Backup -- Rough Start

I was trying to copy my existing backup file to the NAS and that's where my problem occurred. Is that what you did? You say Time Backup -- is that something other than Time Machine? Thanks for your assistance.

Time Machine Backup -- Rough Start

Greetings. I have a new Synology DS213J and one of the reasons I bought the NAS is to migrate Time Machine from my DAS to the NAS. I have been following the instructions I've found online. The first thing I did was create a user and a shared folder on my second volume. I turned off Time...

    NAS Backup Strategy

I've done the initial setup, configuring each drive as a basic EXT4 single volume (which I think I did correctly). It seemed to default to the hybrid RAID, but I undid that and was able to figure out how to configure each disk as its own volume. I was wondering if there is any need to set up...

    NAS Backup Strategy

Again, thanks. That's where I'll start then. I appreciate the guidance.

    NAS Backup Strategy

Thanks, stevech. That's pretty much my plan to have the 2TB be the share and the 4TB to be the backup. I plan to back up the local drives via Time Machine and the 2TB through the backup software that is available on Synology. Any problems here? Since I'm a newbie at this, any configuration...

    NAS Backup Strategy

I have ordered a Synology 2 bay system with a 2 TB and a 4 TB drive, I wanted to bounce some ideas off of the forum just to make sure I've thought of everything. I have an iMac, a MBP, a old Dell laptop, and a collection of iPhones and iPads. Never having done this before, here's my current...

    Which Model to buy?

Thanks. In terms of future planning, would the 413j be a way to plan ahead? For about $80 more I can have 4 bays, though I may only use the first two initially. Is there any real difference between the 13 series over the 12 -- looks like the big differences are CPU speed and memory.

    Which Model to buy?

I am currently looking at a 2-bay Synology NAS. At around the $200 price point my options are the DS214se and the DS212j. Still a NAS newbie I did a product comparison on the site and didn't see dramatic differences, though the 214 is a newer model. The other 2-bay models jump in price...

Best NAS for Mac(mostly) home net

One more question. I'm leaning toward a 2-bay model. Can the two drives be different capacities? I'm thinking 2 TB for network storage and 3 or 4 TB for Time machine backups as it will be backing up multiple devices.

Best NAS for Mac(mostly) home net

It seems tike the more I read, the more confused I get. I'm a newbie to all this, so let me put that on the table as well. I was already to dive deep into the Synology NAS game then started reading forum posts saying that the file system options are not optimal for Macs -- they don't have...

    NAS vs. DAS

I purchased a ASUS RT-N66U and it just came late yesterday and I haven't taken it out of the box yet. So, I don't know what firmware it has. So, if I follow what you say, I should look at the NAS for the network storage and a USB drive to run Time machine for the iMac and the macbook pro. Thanks.

    NAS vs. DAS

I am looking to update my home networking and storage. I have primarily a Mac-based network -- iMac, MBP, and a dell laptop. I currently have the iMac using a Lacie directly attached drive for Time Machine backup (that drive is now 90% full). I am looking for two things: - Centralized...
