Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta (stage 2) is now available

Hi @RMerlin . Beta 4 seems very good so far. Running on an RT-AX58U and Speedtest also seems accurate. The speeds detected using the build-in Speedtest are correct for me. Also, Speedtest impact on CPU load on the RT-AX58U is not crazy. For all CPUs, "top" shows 23-30% CPU load. One CPU at...

    News RT-AX68U

Looking at the European electrical plug, this appears to be a review from Spain. Interesting that the RT-AX68U has a Broadcom BCM4906 CPU dual core 1.8 Ghz and 3 external but fixed antennas. Seems like Asus is making this router to very competitively priced.

AC86U Heat sink mod.... er hack

@Maverickcdn agree with you that the design of the shielding got quite a bit in the way of the heatsinking, so the actual heatsink has a transition thermal pad between it and the chip. Good discovery!!!

Agree with @SoCalReviews that @cooloutac has made good contributions to this forum. As we all know, this forum takes place using written English as the main communications medium. For some on the forum, English isn't even their primary language. With written communication, it is also very easy...

AX58U (AX3000) unable to update firmware in 386.1 beta unless factory default.

Also have an RT-AX58U and have flashed freely between 384 and 386 based ROMS without issue. My NVRAM shows: bl_version=0.0.0.5 boardrev=0x1101 boardtype=0x08a3 Would be interesting to see if anyone has a different BL or board rev that may be causing this.

Guest Network on 386 builds doesn't play nice with Chromecast, and a potential workaround

As far as I know, this is not fixed in code and if you don't want AP isolation on your guest network you need to turn if off by setting the variable to 0. @john9527 is in the best position to comment on the way forward on the solution for the GUI.

    News RT-AX68U

I looks like Asus is being a good marketing company, in addition to being a good technical company. We probably all agree that creating many derivative products is a smart strategy on their part to leverage common R&D costs among many products. Some consumers like their routers laying down...

RT-AX58U 2x2 or 4x4 for 5Ghz band? Does anyone really know what time it is?

I agree, it does seem like a ripoff. For the info on the wireless capabilities of the RT-AX58U, look at https://www.snbforums.com/threads/the-story-on-rt-ax58u-rt-ax3000-rt-ax82u-streams.64245/ Partial text of that thread: Tim: Are four streams being used for receive and 2 streams for...

RT-AX58U 2x2 or 4x4 for 5Ghz band? Does anyone really know what time it is?

@cooloutac I agree with you that the RT-AX58U CPU performance is actually pretty decent (as I put in another thread the CPU load when jamming the router with SpeedTest is 1/7th the load of my old RT-AC68U Gen 1). As Merlin noted in the other thread, the main investment Asus made in this...

RT-AX58U 2x2 or 4x4 for 5Ghz band? Does anyone really know what time it is?

Asus is clearly trying to use marketing to differentiate between the RT-AX58U and RT-AX82U so the latter can sell at a higher price point even though the platform is Identical. Heck it's done in many industries where the cost of platform development is high to share the R&D costs over many...

RT-AX58U 2x2 or 4x4 for 5Ghz band? Does anyone really know what time it is?

I was actually participating in some of those threads, but didn't see the Asus response until today that the RT-AX58U is confirmed to be software neutered to using only 2 antennas for transmit (and all 4 antennas for receive) on the 5Ghz band. Thanks for posting and reminding me!

RT-AX58U 2x2 or 4x4 for 5Ghz band? Does anyone really know what time it is?

The RT-AX58U is now stated by Asus as 2x2 on both the 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands. The "gaming" RT-AX82U uses the same hardware and FCCID, but with the addition of fancy LEDs. A great holiday router. Looking at the FCC information https://fcc.io/MSQ/-RTAXJ300 it is pretty plain to see that the...

    News RT-AX68U

Oddly, Asus is reporting the following data rates for the RT-AX68U: 802.11a : up to 54 Mbps 802.11b : up to 11 Mbps 802.11g : up to 54 Mbps 802.11n : up to 450 Mbps 802.11ac : up to 1625 Mbps 802.11ax (2.4GHz) : up to 861 Mbps So the 5Ghz radio appears to be AC only in the Asus marketing...

    News RT-AX68U

I like the vertical orientation of the RT-AX68U. Price is great. Main concern is what dual core CPU are they using and will it have enough grunt? https://wccftech.com/asus-announces-the-rt-ax68u-vertical-wifi-router/

    News RT-AX68U

Agree. My old RT-AC68U ran very hot and with a dual core 800Mhz CPU would run at 70% CPU load when running Speedtest. With the RT-AX58U triple core, I can run Speedtest and CPU load is approximately 7% CPU load with a brief spike to 12% load. The RT-AX58U also runs about 20 degrees C cooler...

    News RT-AX68U

As @cooloutac notes, both Tomato and AsusWRT are based on Linux. Roughly 90% of home routers run on Linux. To check Linux version, I SSH into the router and use the command "uname" with argument "-a" . My RT-AX58U is on Merlin 384.17 which is running Linux 4.1.52. For a good reference, see...
