Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

When you say add VLAN1 for the local wireless, do you mean add the WAP to VLAN1? I currently have everything setup on VLAN1, but I can change it if I need to.

Yessiree :). My devices are getting their IP addresses from the switch at 192.168.10.254.

I don’t disagree with you at all, however, the only reason I’m stepping up to this level of gear is because of the awesome community here and the chance to play around and learn something new. I definitely don’t “need” this level of gear, but it’s a fun hobby right :) I’ve already learned a...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Done! I had listed it out under excluded addresses, but it's easier just to remove it from the pool. I've also gone back into the ATT gateway and re-enabled IP Passthrough (family is in bed). Everything is still working, even after a reboot and refresh of IP lease :) Apparently, adding the...

And here is my port setup (Trunk port 3 is where the WAP581 is connected):

Thanks for the explanation and education :) Everything now reset with 192.168.10.x. Everything is also up and running again :)

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Doh! Is there a reason 192.10.1.0 doesn't work? I'll go through and reset everything, just trying to understand the reasoning :)

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

My router IP address is 192.10.1.1, so I think that's the right address, yeah?

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

I don’t mind copying and pasting with Putty (that’s what I use as well), I just don’t know how to bring up the config to copy :) All I have is the blank command line screen at the moment :)

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

I did reset the switch and wiped everything. No problem. I can easily change the wireless to a trunk port. What’s the benefit of a trunk port? What is the code to write out the config in the telnet session? That would be a lot easier to do than try screen captures. That’s the default value...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Added the WiFi AP to port 3 of the switch and ran the setup wizard. Gave the AP a static IP of 192.10.1.2 Set the default gateway to 192.10.1.254 And internet didn’t work. Then I went back to the LAN config and set the DNS IP to 192.10.1.1 and internet is working. As of now, the basic...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Okay, So I have gone back in and updated some things: ATT gateway is back in normal DHCP mode with address 192.168.1.254 and DHCP server turned on. I had to do this because I can’t put it in passthrough mode while the family is home as all the other devices lose internet :) The Cisco Router...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

I’ll see what I can do this evening. I haven’t tried to telnet into any of the equipment yet, so that will take a bit of experimentation :)

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

So, I had to set the att gateway to IP Passthrough mode. In this mode, the Cisco router receives the external WAN IP address directly passed through from the att gateway. With that enabled, I also set the Cisco router to DHCP and removed the default gateway settings from the switch and turned...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

So, I changed the att gateway to give out 192.168.9.x addresses. Still no internet :( I tried deleting the default gateway info and still no internet.

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Okay, I’ll switch the network addresses around tonight or Friday (depends on how Halloween goes with the kids) and report back.

I can’t thank you enough for all the help so far. I have to call it a night for now. I did run into a problem though with internet access (see my edited post above). I’ll try to pick up again tomorrow if you’ve got time. Thanks!!!!!

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Lol! Now worries at all. Everything seems to be working. Ah, I spoke too soon. I’ve lost internet when I changed the DHCP default router to 192.168.1.254. Actually, I’m not sure what broke the internet. I tried removing the default gateway info and I still don’t have internet. I’m...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Okay, found the switch default gateway under IPv4 static routes. It’s definitely not clear though. I had to enter the destination prefix (0.0.0.0) the prefix length (0), the next hop (router IP). Hopefully that’s correct? For the DHCP setup, I do see an option under the network pool dialog...
