Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

I’m a bit confused here. Are you saying the default gateway for my SG350 switch needs to be the router ip (192.168.1.1)? If so, where do I set the default gateway? The DHCP screen for VLAN1 doesn’t have anywhere to enter the default gateway.

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Okay, so I’ve set the up address of the switch and I’ve connected the router to the switch via port 1 on the router and port26 on the switch (port 1 on the switch is a 60W PoE port so I didn’t want to use it for the router connection). Now I presume I need to turn off DHCP on the router?

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

I’m trying to work through this setup on the switch. It’s not really clear to me where to set the IP address on the switch? I can set an IPv4 interface address on VLAN1 on the switch. Is that the correct way to set the static IP address? I’m not understanding what you mean regarding how to...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Just so I’m understanding this, VLAN1 is automatically created on the router under the LAN->VLAN Settings screen. I’m not currently adding any additional VLANs. On that VLAN settings page, the VLAN1 is currently setup as a DHCP server with range 192.168.1.100-149. There is also a LAN/DHCP...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

I’m currently running this in a test setup so I used 192.168.2.x so that I wouldn’t have any IP conflicts (the att gateway is using 192.168.1.x and is still acting as the DHCP server for the remainder of the devices on my network.) I can (and would prefer to) switch to 192.168.1.x. I’m...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Sweet! Thanks. I was poking around and I’m not entirely certain where/how to enable DHCP on the switch? I currently have VLAN1 defined on the router using the 192.168.2.x domain with basically no changes to the switch as of now.

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

I’ll try to grab some screenshots in the next day or 2. Going to be busy tonight with kids stuff and World Series :) I should clarify that I only have the router doing DHCP. The switch and WAP are using DHCP to get their IP address, not assigning IP addresses. Or in other words, I haven’t set...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

So I setup the router and switch behind my att gateway. I just set the router to get it’s up from the gateway via DHCP and setup a VLAN1 on the 192.168.2.x domain with the router as the DHCP server. The switch is setup to receive its IP address from the router via DHCP on the 192.168.2.x...

No, it does not support VLans. Good catch. I still don’t understand that bit fully yet, so definitely missed that aspect of it.

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Thanks for the awesome write up! I’ll definitely search back for your switch setup thread to understand a bit better. You are correct that there is no way for the ATT gateway to be placed in bridge mode. With that in mind, I’m wondering what use there is for the Cisco router if all the...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Okay, so I got things sorted out with the switch. now it’s time to set things up piece by piece :) My understanding is that I’ll need to set the att gateway to an alternate ip address range so that I can use the Cisco default of 192.168.1.1 (I prefer to use that range in the Cisco). Then...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

The router and switch arrived today, both new in box. I was unpleasantly surprised to see that the switch is an EU version. The ad on eBay listed it as NA version. What issues can I expect with the EU version? I’m assuming it will be unsupported by Cisco but what about warranty?

Attached is a diagram of the data flow within the network as I *think* it needs to happen. The blue lines indicate one way data flow. Items in red outline do not need internet access.

In our case the vizio TV has airplay and chrome cast built in so no Apple TV in our system. I’ll see if I can put together a diagram of what devices have to talk to one another.

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

That’s weird about the Apple devices and could cause me some serious trouble. I use the iphones to control my HTPC’s which get their media from the server, so they would need to be on the same network. Similarly we often cast from the phone to the Vizio TV and to the google home devices. I only...

Home Network Design help with L3 Switch

Hey all, As a followup to my recent post in the wireless forum around designing a network for my house (thanks @coxhaus and @Trip , I'm hoping to get some help from the experts on designing, installing, and setting up the equipment I purchased: ATT Fiber Gateway (provided by ATT) Cisco RV340...

Help with Network Layout for 2-story home

You are correct Trip regarding the PPPoE being done on the ATT ONP. I just need to figure out how to get the ATT hardware to play nice with the Cisco hardware :). I’ll definitely want to understand more about setting up L3 on the switch, which I’ll put into a new thread for the actual network...

Help with Network Layout for 2-story home

Coxhaus, you rock! I will definitely setup a separate thread to get the planning going. I can’t thank everyone enough who helped out on this thread, you all helped me feel comfortable that I can get this all setup with admittedly zero network training other than basic setup of WiFi routers :)

Help with Network Layout for 2-story home

I’m happy to hear you guys are in alignment because I just ordered the Cisco gear and it should be here next weekend :) I’m planning to set up the router and switch on a test bench connected to the ATT gateway initially so that I don’t interrupt anything at the house, and then I’ll add in the...

Help with Network Layout for 2-story home

Okay, one last post before I start pulling the trigger on gear :) Comparing the following stacks: Ubiquiti: ER-4 Router ES-240-250W Switch (used) Unifi AC-HD Access Points (qty 2) Cisco: RV340 Router SG350-28P switch (used) WAP581 Access Points (qty 2) Cost difference between the 2 is...
