Moving on from a ASUS n-56u. Need suggestions.

I think you can get an Asus RT-AC68U (or maybe the RT-AC68P with the faster CPU) for ~$100 or less.

    100% CPU issue RT-N66U

15Mbyte/sec wirelessly? That's practically the limit of what your router is capable of, so a high cpu load is normal.

Router introduces ~1% packet loss in sustained overnight ping test

You should probably test completely internally rather than pinging an external host. You should also try to isolate the pings between 2 devices connected to the AP. You might try to run tcpdump and see what is happening when your Play-Fi speakers glitch. What protocol does your Play-Fi...

How to get workstations connected to 3 routers to connect to each other

You could just forward the ports since you're doing double-NAT but this is sub-optimal. Or you could disable DHCP on router 2 & 3 and have them function as switches. Do you need 3 separate networks? If not, just put everything in the same subnet by disabling DHCP on everything but router 1.

Test wireless connection reliability, e.g. packet drops

You could use the router's command-line tools like "wl", "ip", and "ifconfig" to view statistics that should include network errors & whatnot. Though, let's say you see errors, what next? How do you fix it or know what's causing it? My new microwave causes my WiFi to almost completely crash...

    Q) Router port forward for itself

I'm not sure I understand but if you are trying to expose the router's httpd GUI to the web, that's a very, very bad idea. If you really want remote access, setup OpenVPN.

High ping spikes on my Asus RT-AC68U

What is your connection speed? What is your configured QoS bandwidths? For a good intro to QoS fundamentals, read: http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threads/qos-tutorial.68795/

RT-AC88U What is a good operating temperature for this router

Does the log mention why it's rebooting (maybe a remote log or a nvram-stored log is required to see this). Where are you seeing this temp? On the exterior case or some internal part? What temp does the GUI report?

Few questions before I venture into JTAG-land

Give it a few years and the mastery of internet markup crappery will be it's own (sad?) degree. Is there a degree for avoiding mistakes? :) PS - Don't use children or age as an excuse. I mean, there's really no need for an excuse... though, kids are neato (for you).

QOS bandwidth limitation per device below 1Mb/s

You can't set it in kilobits?

Go hire someone or pay us more.

Port 53 Open According to Shodan

If you have a dynamic IP, Shodan could be reporting that port 53 was open when someone else had your current IP. You could use some free online port scanner to confirm that it is open.

LAN MTU for a PPPoE connection to avoid packet fragmentation

Within your LAN, PMTU should work fine so fragmentation shouldn't happen... I think. You will lose <1% efficiency by forcing 1492 but that probably wouldn't be noticeable. With my PPPoE ADSL internet I've also wondered about the impact of forcing 1492 locally myself. Neither seemed to impact...

LAN MTU for a PPPoE connection to avoid packet fragmentation

I think OP is questioning whether to force all LAN clients (via DHCP or manually?) to 1492 or allow PMTU negotiation at the router to do it's job. I dunno. More clarification is needed from OP.

LAN MTU for a PPPoE connection to avoid packet fragmentation

You reduced it at the LAN clients or at the gateway router?
  17. Nullity

LAN MTU for a PPPoE connection to avoid packet fragmentation

Maybe. Local clients should be able to figure out the MTU for a given path. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_MTU_Discovery

Article suggestion: speed test sites and other tools to measure bandwidth

Especially for reasonably precise network testing, I've found that the most accurate way to test download speed is to just start a normal download from some respectable sites (I like kernel.org) and observe the speeds over a longer timespan than most speedtests. Speedtests generally seem to be...

    Qualcomm StreamBoost

The only thing I know about Streamboost is that it makes use of fq_codel, so that's pretty neat.

ASUS rt-88u - Adaptive QoS not doing it's job (for Gaming)

PPP/LCP echo are different than ICMP echo though. The PPP daemon should never(?) drop PPP echo packets and I am unaware of an integrated QoS implementation that simultaneously & actively controls the PPP daemon along with TCP/IP's QoS. Maybe though?
