[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

Doesn't Auto channel automatically choose the "best" channel? I'd be hesitant to do the automated Ch.1 to Ch.11 switching because if your neighbors' WiFi uses Auto then it's hard predict which channels are best. What's best today might be the worst next week. If you still want to do it, you...

Confused about the 68U and 68P in router ranker

They have? You can use CamelCamelCamel to see Amazon's price history. http://camelcamelcamel.com/RT-AC66U-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC1750-AiProtection-Complete/product/B008ABOJKS http://camelcamelcamel.com/RT-AC68U-Wireless-AC1900-Dual-Band-AiProtection-Complete/product/B00FB45SI4...

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

I think you misunderstood. The older codebase (AsusWRT 374.43) that this fork is forked from is more stable, not the older versions of this fork.

Try Private Browsing, which avoids all caches, etc.

Confused about the 68U and 68P in router ranker

AFAIK, the -P simply has a faster CPU.

Use guitar picks to open it. They are cheap, come in many thicknesses, and are usually readily available. Personally, I just permantently borrowed some from my friends. ;)

SPONSORED: Don't Get Caught In The Wireless Mesh

Whatever happened to TDLS? This technology seems like it could really help, especially with mesh's backhaul limitations, yet I've seen nothing mentioned about TDLS in consumer-grade wireless for years.

Ping Spikes on Ethernet when using Merlin build from a few months ago

First, I'd begin troubleshooting by exclusively pinging internal hosts to show where the latency actually originates.

Ping Spikes on Ethernet when using Merlin build from a few months ago

They use the same drivers, AFAIK. Are pinging internal or external hosts? When using Merlin, was it acting as an AP or router? Did you Reset to Defaults with Merlin's release?

    To Mesh or Not

Latency is likely worse, but latency is not really a concern with media, bandwidth is. Assuming that latency increases (does it?), any service that uses short-life connections (web-surfing, DNS, email) would suffer though, among other things like gaming or voice communication.

    Last 24 hour traffic limit

    iptables supports quotas. https://www.netfilter.org/documentation/HOWTO/netfilter-extensions-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.13

    scheduled QOS/Bandwidth limits

Linux iptables is capable of schedules. Something like "iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -m time --timestart 12:00 --timestop 23:59 -j ACCEPT" but I dunno how to tie that capability to a tc QoS filter/queue. You'd need to run the commands at every boot via a script. Surely it's possible...

    RT-AC87R 380.62_1 QoS

I've seen people mention this constantly. Traditional QoS might be broken.

pfSense/Sophos vs ASUSWRT/RMerlin - Is there any reason to change?

Unless ports are forwarded/open, I bet ANY firewall, consumer or otherwise, is more than secure enough. Has there ever been a remotely exploitable vuln in iptables or pf? Once services are added and ports are open, the administrator now has most of the responsibility for securing the network...

Is an Edge Router Lite (ERL) a good idea for Gigabit Internet service?

Respectfully, I agree with your question (and partly with the phrasing), but I think you (especially as a power-figure) should avoid derogatory & flippant phrases like "please enlighten us" when addressing remarkably helpful people like kvic.

rt-ac56u: How to reduce transmit power

It'd probably be better if you searched for some previous threads on this topic. Some of the most active threads have been on this exact topic (sort by views/replies). Example: Asus locking down routers to comply with new FCC rules Good luck. ;)

rt-ac56u: How to reduce transmit power

Because it hides it from the majority who want "MORE POWAAAAH!". Just like many things though, people with the time and knowledge can do most anything they want.

    Best Traffic-Management Router for Gaming

Yeah, I'd go for a ER-X or some Mikrotik device with fq_codel. Or you could install tomato, which I think supports fq_codel and is generally better than AsusWRT with regards to traffic-shaping. Traffic-shaping is complex, so be prepared for that... Toastman has the best intro to QoS tutorial...

[Fork] Asuswrt-Merlin 374.43 LTS releases (Archive)

That project seems to focus on high-bandwidth devices with ample processing power where undersized buffers become the primary throughput bottleneck. We are limited by the CPU. For example, the slowest speed in their graph is faster than the fastest speed of the fastest Asus router is capable of.

Both SFTP and SCP use SSH, so you should get the same performance. FTPS (FTP with TLS/SSL) is another topic, but it's likely to perform just as bad. These routers are just not powerful enough to deal with much encryption. For better performance you could choose a different, less CPU-intensive...
