Asus rt-ax86u 5ghz band crashing with new firmware when downloading

I'm even more specific. Given both this set of issues, which seems concentrated towards the AX86U, and issues around QoS/flow cache, which is seemingly exclusive to the AX86U, I would avoid this router altogether, if given the choice, until ASUS fixes any of these issues.

Asus rt-ax86u 5ghz band crashing with new firmware when downloading

This is fair, but most of the issues raised are related to, if not caused by, the ASUS defaults. Auto/160/DFS is asking for trouble, IMHO, and always has been. It would also be helpful if the DFS scan wasn't achingly slow, and that the router at least tried to place on an empty, non-DFS...

330/110 Fiber - Best and easiest QoS settings to manage bufferbloat?

At 550 down, you're getting very diminished returns by using any QoS at all. Sure you might get the occasional latency bump, but is it worth the CPU hit or bandwidth hit? I would add no QoS to your comparison - it may open your eyes a bit.

    Traditional QoS performance

It only works because you have 100/100, so not near the point where hardware acceleration would come into play. Anyone with above ~200Mb/s will see issues.
  5. H

    Traditional QoS performance

Believe traditional turns off hardware acceleration, hence the cap at ~250-300 Mbps. ASUS would suggest to use Adaptive, which doesn't have this issue, but it requires TrendMicro enabling, but it's also outright broken on at least the AX86U, for example, so YMMV.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 Beta is available for select models

Put stock FW on the node.

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21709

Beg to differ on QoS. Downstream still throttled waaaay too much.

    Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.21709

Efficient use of caching in RAM is a feature, not a bug. "Managing" it can be improved, but it shouldn't be at the cost of efficient caching, it should enhance it.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 Beta is available for select models

Most with the AX86U have experienced poor QOS performance long before 388.1 - flow cache is simply broken on this router, from the looks of it. For downstream <= ~ 300Mb/s, you can cheat and disable fc to restore performance, but this won't work well with higher bandwidth connections.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 Beta is available for select models

100Mbit isn't a good test case here - too little bandwidth to be impacted. GEForce disables fc and hardware acceleration though, and is more of a black box. Cake is known entity, and works, with the same drawbacks.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 Beta is available for select models

Slightly related to this, and while you have the engineers on the line about fc... Flow cache on the AX86U has caused major issues with QoS (believe stock and with Merlin Addons) for a while now. Some of the original classification bugs appear to have been worked out, but fc actually throttles...

FlexQoS FlexQoS 1.3.2 - Flexible QoS Enhancement Script for Adaptive QoS

Tried beta and "develop," and while QOS "works" in terms of classification, it still throttles downloads waaaay too much with fc enabled. Disabling fc immediately fixes.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 Beta is available for select models

Try stock FW on the node. Fixed this for me.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 Beta is available for select models

What is it with Asus and flow cache these days? QoS on the AX86U's has been broken, possibly since inception, and the only fix is to disable fc. @Kingp1n seems to be hinting at improvement on the 388.1 GPL version, so who knows?

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 388.1 Beta is available for select models

I know AIMesh is closed-source, but just reporting... 388.1 beta AX86U with AX86S hardwired node, ethernet backhaul only turned on. If the node is on stock, AIMesh works fine. If the node is on merlin, it reports as connection being severed, but still assigns clients there.

FlexQoS Best method to optimise flex for gaming

Possibly stupid question - has anyone actually communicated the QOS issues on the AX86U, specifically with fc , with Asus? I imagine just sending a generic feedback would get binned instantaneously.

    ASUS AX68U 5GHz Band Dropping / Disappearing

Gah - i just found a mistake in my thinking. The 86 Pro won't be a radio match. Even the vanilla 86U is probably overkill for my setup, so I'll just look for a deal there.

    ASUS AX68U 5GHz Band Dropping / Disappearing

Yep - same thought. The 86S wasn't available at time of purchasing the 68U, but the tea leaves seem to point to the 68U being an afterthought, if not on the way out.

RT-AX86U PRO page now up ...

How is his speedtest / bufferbloat test reflective of "ridiculously bad" latency?
