    Best router choices for Merlin support on a budget

    honestly, and without knowing your budget - i would look for a second-hand AX-56U or AX-3000. The 68U is very very long in the tooth for most merlin usage (i.e. fine as a router, but you're missing horsepower for other tasks). 86U's tend to hover around $120, give or take, another good choice...

    Try via the "network map" screen, and not the AIMesh one. I would bet WPS is off on your main router, and this "new" AIMesh screen doesn't prompt to turn it on.

    One bug i found when rebuilding my mesh recently WPS is probably the key - i noticed that the AIMesh 2 screens don't prompt you to turn on WPS, if off, and thus fail. The "Network Map" screens do.

    On cpuwait / temps - a question that's been bugging me from an earlier thread: http://www.snbforums.com/threads/ac86u_386-1_beta4-is-it-available-high-running-temps-on-cpu.69032/post-648572 Is there a hog out there that is a bigger cause of these temps? Can't find it yet, but i may be 100% wrong

    Maybe I'm misremembering here, but any chance this is load-related? I haven't confirmed by rolling back, but i noticed my router has a load average around 2 constantly, even when essentially idle. This seems high, and wondering if it's contributing?

    Maybe? It doesn't match their own 386 FAQ ( https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1044184 ), and changed since 384.x, if so.

    Sorry, I wasn't specific enough. By "only 1G Wan" i meant that is have Auto + 1G Wan, but not ethernet. In prior builds i had ethernet to select. I also default to auto.

    Anyone else only seeing "1G WAN First" on backhaul preference? I'm on merlin's 386 Alpha 4, but i know AIMesh is closed source, so it should be common to the beta.

    Shot in dark, because i know AIMesh is out of scope, but anyone seeing "1G WAN First" only, when trying to prefer Ethernet backhaul? I have a mix of wired and wireless nodes, so i can't just enable ethernet backhaul.

    Dirty upgrade on 86U from .19. Being bitten by this at the moment: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/test-asuswrt-merlin-384-19-openvpn-test-builds.65323/page-2#post-604325 Almost 30 mins now, and the webui still isn't up, but router is functional.

    Same exact issue coming from .18. My jffs backup wouldn't apply. I don't have an extensive install of scripts (amtm, entware, cake), so i re-formatted and started from scratch.

    Sigh - less than a day after my full revert. Of course. :) Any idea what might have happened on a VPN connection from my earlier chat? Perhaps IPV6 defaults on now?

    Ended up having to fully revert - my corporate VPN connection was flapping on/off from the second i jumped online. Reverted the 86U main to merlin 384.18, reset/etc, and my VPN issue was fixed immediately. I tried adding the problematic node (still on the RC2) after reverting the main, and it...

    Yeah, I've reset each of the 3 units, including WPS resetting the problematic one. No luck at all.

    AC86U main router, and 2 68U nodes - one wired, one wireless. I updated the main router first, in order to keep the nodes connected (ease of forcing the upgrade) Wired node successfully upgraded, and dropped/rejoined. Wireless node upgraded, dropped, but now won't rejoin. I've tried resets...

    @RMerlin you're your usual humble self, but wouldn't moving to your excellent firmware fix both the CPU issues with this build (albeit by a gpl rollback of sorts), as well as provide a Kr00k patch? Just a thought for those concerned...
