Here AC56U with 40E9, using stubby with Cleanbrowsing. I don't have this problem. Too lazy to try Quad1. BTW, I no longer use the N16 as DNS server.

Yup, I had this problem since long ago, because the router seems to need DNS resolving before it is able to properly start Entware and DoT. I solved it this way: flashed OpenWRT to an old RT-N16, which has become my DNS server (running stubby). Both my routers are behind the modem/router from my...

Security patches for devices no longer supported by Asus. Other software updates.

The hotspot has to be supported by the firmware. Not all are.

    Yes, flash through the browser.

Then it is much simpler to do DoH or DoT on the Pi hole.

On a RT-N16 if you don't use the transition build, you will soft-brick it.

There is some degree of protection from mere pixie dust, but don't count upon WPS being secure, there are other ways to hack it. It's like the attacker does not find your key in 30 seconds, he finds it in 48 hours.

Disable WPS. That is the protection.

Merlin original, Merlin LTE L and Merlin LTE E have three different Wi-Fi drivers, so you have to find out for yourself.

I solved it this way: Installed stubby from entware. Edited stubby.yml with the servers I desire. Put a cron job that restarts stubby periodically.

ntpMerlin ntpMerlin - NTP Daemon for AsusWRT Merlin

AFAIK my box does not have a real ntpd, but it is from BusyBox (Openntp).

ntpMerlin ntpMerlin - NTP Daemon for AsusWRT Merlin

My Kodi box (EM7680) could not sync time until I have mangled TCP. Error message was "peer is unsynced". After I mangled TCP it works out of the box. https://www.speedguide.net/port.php?port=123 says NTP uses both TCP and UDP (IANA has assigned both).

You should mangle ntp 123/tcp too.

Yup, my AC56U gets sometimes booted off the modem during reboots of the router. I have to power it off for 30 seconds and then power it again. I now try to address it by giving the router a fixed WAN IP. Condolences, too.

Yup, not AdGuard, but Cleanbrowsing. Did not bother much about it, I have installed stubby from entware (by amtm) and built a custom config.

You may report Merlin's bugs on this forum. No, they don't pay you for disclosing exploits, you merely report them because you want them solved.

AFAIK AC56U has not been locked to a certain firmware, if you run into problems, run mtd-write version 2 for ARM with mtd-write -i firm.trx -d linux (Rename the firmware to firm.trx and make it available to the router.)
