2.4Ghz WiFi on a RT-AC86U - what are the optimal settings?

Just curious…what’s the reason for using a DTIM value of 3 instead of changing it to 1? I know Asus AC routers default to 3 while AX routers default to 1…but any specific technical reason other than “that’s the default”?

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

Well...great! Thanks for confirming :) I couldn't resist, so I flashed with the latest firmware, did a factory reset, re-configured all settings (including disabling universal beamforming)!!! I'm happy again :)

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

The notes don’t mention anything about fixing the missing toggles. Someone on Reddit mentioned that Asus told him it might not get fixed until the next version or the version after that. I’m also currently running Merlin and don’t feel like jumping back to stock, especially since the problem is...

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

AX/AC beamforming and universal beamforming are both enabled by default as confirmed via the SSH command I ran. It’s just that the toggles for those settings are missing in the GUI for the 5GHz radio. I’m fine with AX/AC beamforming being enabled but I’d like to disable universal since it’s not...

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

Hi @drabisan, forgot to ask…is there a way of disabling universal beamforming for the 5GHz band via an SSH command (in the absence of the toggle)? When I ran the SSH command to check universal beamforming status, I saw a 0 for one record and 1 for two or three other records. I’m assuming that...

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

Asus omitting the beamforming toggle in their firmware is most certainly a mistake. That’s a pretty big oopsie on their part. And if you’ve ever dealt with their (utterly lousy) customer service (including their senior tech support team), you wouldn’t be surprised by the mistake :)

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

Actually, I made a lot of changes (and disabled quite a few professional settings) per numerous recommendations from some of the wifi gurus on this forum, and I’m getting much better performance and compatibility compared to the default settings. I don’t trust the default settings because I...

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

Thanks. As I mentioned to drabisan, ax/ac beamforming is, indeed, enabled (confirmed using the ssh cmd) despite the toggle not being available. By the way, how are you finding the latest Merlin firmware for the 86U Pro?

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

Thanks for the command. Confirmed it's enabled (value of 15)! And yes, even after a factory default, the ax/ac beamforming option isn't there. Asus messed up, but at least they left it enabled by default :)

AX86U Pro - ax/ac beamforming question in latest stock firmware

Hello. The current stock firmware for the AX86U Pro is missing the ax/ac beamforming toggle under the 5GHz Professional settings tab. I believe it’s a bug in the latest firmware based on what I’ve been able to gather; and that Asus will re-implement the toggle in a later firmware release. Does...

Does RT-AX86U Pro Support Jumbo Frames?

Probably another bug in the latest stock firmware. You’ll notice that there’s also no option to toggle “AC/AX Beamforming” on/off under the 5GHz network…that’s also a bug. I hope Asus gets their crap together and releases better firmware soon.

Asus RT-AX86U Pro - a few questions about WiFi settings

Hello everyone. I recently purchased an RT-AX86U Pro. Loving it so far but had a couple of questions. I’ve been going thru some of the threads on this forum and also reading other articles. There seems to be conflicting and inconsistent advice on whether or not to use MU-MIMO and OFDMA. I’ve...

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

OK thanks. Not that it matters because I don’t have the AX86U and I’m not planning on getting one anytime soon (or at all). I was just curious because it was one of several reasons why I decided not to get the router. I don’t do any online gaming so the feature was useless to me. And I didn’t...

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

Does anyone know if the “gaming” port (i.e. LAN port 1) on the AX86U can be turned into a standard port? Meaning can the prioritization (or QoS) be disabled for that port? I’m not referring to the Adaptive or standard QoS features. I’m referring to the prioritization that is supposedly enabled...

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

Thanks very much for your detailed response and your feedback…very much appreciated! Just a few more points I wanted to make: 1. I noticed improved range and stability on 5GHz with the AC86U compared to my old 68U. I didn’t noticed it at first but after several days of using the new router, I...

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

Thanks. I’m very satisfied with my AC86U, but had thought about getting the AX version. A few things held me back: 1. Couldn’t justify paying almost double for the AX version when I don’t have any AX clients and I’ve been perfectly satisfied with AC performance and speed. Also, the AX standard...

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

Updated the router to the new stock firmware (x.386.44470) released a few days ago and the temp has dropped about 2 degrees (and holding for several days) at 75. Performance, range, and connectivity remain solid and stable.

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

Continuing to monitor and temp has been holding at ~77. The router is in an open space with plenty of ventilation. Room temp is usually around 25. Having said that, I wouldn’t say the router is under any significant load. There are 3 wired clients and 11 wireless clients, but not all are...

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

Done. It said 77.289. When I reloaded the link, it dropped to 76.798.

    RT-AC86U 2.4Ghz is gone

Ah OK, got it. I’ve now disabled everything you’ve suggested. Thanks again. So far so good. Also, my AC86U is quite cool to the touch (temperature wise)…it actually runs cooler than my old AC68U. Do you think these 2020 versions were built differently (better)?
