    [384.18_Alpha Builds] Testing all variants

I had started with a factory default reset on the previous alpha, didn't work then. Perhaps it's a wireless high band setting mismatch between the my Merlin AX88U and the ZenWiFi XT8 needed for initial pairing but, since others are seeing this, it might not be related to the AiMesh at all.

    [384.18_Alpha Builds] Testing all variants

I'd be interested to know how you go. I hadn't noticed this in rev 17 but I have now seen it in the 18 alpha. And I'm not able to pair my two ZenWiFi XT8 nodes with 18 alpha or rev 17. Ian

Gt-ax11000 as router + ZenWifi AX8 as nodes setup.

You shouldn't need to, no. But it's the first thing you should do if you have problems pairing them.

    ZenWiFi XT8 new firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25524

Note that I can't speak for the ZenWiFi XT8, both of mine are nodes to my AX11000, so there may be a problem with the XT8 I cannot check. I have restrictions on where (power availability), and what (space availalbe), and proximity (far enough away from other node), I can put the nodes so I can't...

    ZenWiFi XT8 new firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25524

I guess that's europe, it looks like you should have enough contiguous channels on both 5GHz low and hi ranges, I wonder if the ASUS (or Broadcomm) WiFI implementation allows their selection? What channels do you see in the channel selection drop down?

    ZenWiFi XT8 new firmware 3.0.0.4.386_25524

What region are you in, IOW will the channel availability in your region allow it?

Gt-ax11000 as router + ZenWifi AX8 as nodes setup.

No, you don't need to change anything on the AiMesh nodes, they only need to be factory default reset and left alone until joined to the mesh by the master. There have been some odd problems reported from time to time with ethernet backhaul but if you can get it working it may be better...

Running simultaneous instances of OpenVPN Clients using ExpressVPN

I'm sorry, I don't understand what your problem is! Usually the problem is you can't have multiple connections to the same server because the address range used for clients of the server is going to be the same for each connection which the provider is unlikely to be able to change and that...

    New GT-AX11000 firmware 3.0.0.4.384_9165

And there's more to it as well. If you don't have any VPN clients setup and add one (or two) then the client can't connect it spins forever trying. And I'm not the only one who has seen this behaviour. It's hard to understand how this was missed unless there was no testing done at all on the...

    [384.18_Alpha Builds] Testing all variants

Yeah, but there's probably two links in the chain upstream from Merlin. ASUS who get the board development hit from Broadcomm, both having lots of products to maintain causing long development delays. ASUS software engineering themselves might not be able to do anything about it. Not that ASUS...

Oh, thanks, sounds like it's more than it appeared to be.

    RT-AX86U/RT-AX5700 hits the FCC

Yeah, but that's what you get in Australia, I expect US prices will be quite a bit less but who really knows how those prices are set.

    [384.18_Alpha Builds] Testing all variants

LOL, so the answer is "yes" and "no" ... But it's not the same as the router sub-directory tree where the bulk of improvements live. IOW very few, if any, "fixes" or "enhancements" are applied there, is that right?

    [384.18_Alpha Builds] Testing all variants

One other thing I was wondering about. Do you also apply fixes to the development kit directory tree as you go? For example directory trees like src-rt-5.02hnd or src-rt-5.02axhnd etc.

    Merlin or stock firmware?

Perhaps your misinterpreting ongoing development challenges with stability ... I found the stock AX88U firmware quite stable but so are the Merlin releases. But there have been problems with stock over time which often don't show up in Merlin. Occasionally problems show up in Merlin but that's...

Locking/unlocking and page allocation failure errors

    Oh, see this: https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin.ng/issues/311

Locking/unlocking and page allocation failure errors

Oh wait you have 2GB swap configured, ok. I wonder if there's some problem with the buffer cache releasing pages when needed ... mmm ... really don't know ...
  18. R

Locking/unlocking and page allocation failure errors

Those errors look bad. I'm not at all familiar with how the page tables work but have to think it could be a problem with the USB3 driver code, perhaps with how much RAM it wants, and the page table errors could be due to lack of RAM too, I'm just not sure about that. Maybe you've got a bit...

    [384.18_Alpha Builds] Testing all variants

Looking at the repo I'm starting to get an idea of how it hangs together now. I see that binary blob copy script, those blobs are all over the place, makes any sort of separation of bits of the repo hard. And it's hard to see how merging overhead could be reduced by any re-organization since...

    [384.18_Alpha Builds] Testing all variants

Thanks for taking some time to describe the process and for your thoughts. Right, that sounds a lot like what I thought it would be. That's hard work to be sure, and does require a lot of experience with the code base your working with. As you've said a few times, a very steep uphill learning...
