    Unifi AP questions

Yes, that is a good next step. You will want to pick the channel with the least competing signal. In rural areas and suburbs, this is easy. It denser area it can be a challenge. In high-density areas like schools, office buildings, and large apartment building it is an art form unto itself. I...

    Unifi AP questions

In my opinion, the Unifi APs outlasts other multipurpose devices marketed to consumers while under heavy load. I experiment with computer vision on semi-autonomous robots as a hobby. As a result, I work with large video and data files. Often I back the files up to my NAS so that I can run...

    Unifi AP questions

One of the challenges with manual configs is that they require knowledge and experience to set correctly. The number of dials on a Unifi Network Controller can be overwhelming. As a recent (18 months ago) convert, I would suggest leaving as much as possible at the defaults. The defaults are...

    Router(s) for a 4000 sq ft house

An interesting note to this conversation is that builders of 0f high to mid-range in my area are recommending running ethernet cable for security cameras and a few APs for new home builds. One of the common complaints they get is about recently built homes (last couple of years) is that "the...

    Unifi AP questions

Unifi has a pretty good forum at https://community.ui.com/questions . I ran into a bit of frustration with the 'already paired' message. If you pair a device with a controller it stays paired until you manually unpair it via the controller. It can mb a bit of a pain if you are experimenting...

    Router(s) for a 4000 sq ft house

@CrystalLattice Yes, I was sad to see that the last major article on the site was several months ago. I didn't always find the reviews particularly helpful. I thought they overemphasized raw speed in a single client to a single AP configuration. Whereas, I felt like my network issues were...

    Router(s) for a 4000 sq ft house

@Trip Thanks, I got your original message before it disappeared for moderation. Weird. Sounds like, if you have more time (or existing knowledge) than money the route you suggest is optimal. If you have a bit more budget and shortage of time (or existing knowledge) the vertically integrated...

    Router(s) for a 4000 sq ft house

@Trip Does the rukus line have anything comparable to the basic Unifi security gateway + 8 port switch + Network Controller (mine runs on a NAS)? As someone who does not have the time/interest to become an expert network admin, I found having a single control panel to be a game-changer. I try...

    Router(s) for a 4000 sq ft house

If your home requires multiple Access Points and you have above-average bandwidth usage. I would encourage you to look into an Unifi system by Ubiquity. I screwed around with multiply 'home' routers for several years before I went with the Unifi system. My initial concern was not so much raw...

Introduction To The TR-398 Wi-Fi Performance Test

Tim, I wish you the best on this change of direction. I followed SNB for years. It was the best source of information for those of us who wanted to get them most out of our home network but didn't have the time to become network engineers. For the past couple of years I have not spent much...

    Ubiquiti under SEC Investigation

Seems like they used session counts rather than unique users in their marketing materials to boost the size of their community. Too bad, their UniFi software is promising for high tech homes that have outgrown currently available consumer products but can't justify enterprise level gear. To be...

Insight from Google Fiber - WiFi Performance

Welcome, I am also pretty new here. Was activate in the NSLU2 era. I am not sure if I am an outlier, but the overall customer (ie family) satisfaction of our home/office network has been significantly improved by dealing with the slow clients rather than focusing on the highest speed.

Quarantine IoT on their own AP and VLAN?

Nice. That makes things a lot easier if I can control my cheapskate nature and not buy the cheapest thing available from banggood.

    Sponsored: Wi-Fi Mesh System Secrets

Roaming is a very big deal in the enterprise. A general rule of thumb seems to be to be able to handle people walking a ~ 1km/h and not getting perceivable drop offs on voip calls. Most enterprise level systems use several strategies to improve roaming. There is also some fascinating work done...

Ditching UniFi but need an alternative

I think your USG pro can handle 3Mbps throughput with QOS turned on. It has a much better processor. There seem to be a lot of complaints on the unbt forms about unexpectedly slow performance on the basic USG with QOS turned on. Just thought I would point out the issue for the OP.

Ditching UniFi but need an alternative

I am also going through the same process. The question of which is better seems to depend greatly on one's use case. Many of the consumer grade router with flashing leds and lots of antennas seem to do a good job at raw throughput. Great if the router only needs to serve one client at a time...

    Sponsored: Wi-Fi Mesh System Secrets

Looking forward, 802.11ax will have up t0 8 spacial streams. Due to power, heat, and space constraints it is unlikely that many client devices will use more than 2 or 3 streams in the near future. In theory, that will allow AP's (and mesh points) to have 5 or 6 streams for backhaul. I am not...

Quarantine IoT on their own AP and VLAN?

There seem to be a couple of challenges here. The biggest challenge is that the Wi-Fi standard is evolving remarkably quickly. New features for working well together on a network are added each release. High end devices are usually certified compatible by the Wi-Fi alliance. Low end devices...

    MIMO Sharing Question

Thanks, I was searching for "spatial streams" and was getting buried in results that only said "more streams = higher data rate" Found a great reference in a section titled 'Multiple Antenna Technologies' in a Coursera course on wireless communications...
