    I only keep the power LED on, all others off. On theory all solid state components have a life span but I never seen anyone who died from old age yet, LOL!

    How is the signal strength between 2.4 and 5GHz band? Maybe your device is fringe area of 5GHz range? Using WiFi analyzer look at the signal strength. Using different channel makes difference too because signal strength is not equal between channels.

    If two signasl occupy same channel the stronger one wins. Also use 20MHz bandwidth on already crowded 2.4GHz band.

    Run command 'ipconfig /all' see whether ip address changed. Also try ping the router.

    My router is on 24/7, 365 days a year. Most electronic devices in my house stay on standby mode. Of course it uses some fraction of power meaning some $$ but Turning every thing off and on too frequently may increase a chance of shortening the life of any device.     +1, NAS is way more stable compared to USB drive. I never attach anything to router as a matter of fact.

    When you crunch the number it shows difference. So do you use most power efficient, high capacity PSU? The current draw is a few mA for a fan. Some times actual experiences in the field is more valuable than just text book knowledge.
