Asus RT-AX86U vs RT-AC86U - Battle of the Best AC WiFi 5 & AX WiFi 6 Router - Worth the Upgrade?

But is it worth the upgrade? It seems to me like RMerlin has his thoughts about that

Perhaps that template has been removed, not to upset you ;-) LOL

Did that weeks ago. I see no point in upgrading. Despite all the fine work of Merlin, 386 brings more Asus cr.p, more power consumption, more generated heat, more instability.

Well, well, well... Food for thought!

In the past i've used toothpaste caps as feet. It helps for all horizontal placed equipment. Even used it for my home stereo amp. No need for heat, despite what others say about specs, safe margins etc. :)

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.2 is now available

AC2900 on 386.2_2. Decided to do some throughput testing and noticed that when i disable the 2,4 GHz band and only use 5GHz, devices do get connected to the router, yet they can't access the internet. The other way round (only use 2,4GHz) they do have internet access.

Check the CPU temps. Perhaps your CPU's throttling. I don't want to "fire up" the temperature discussion again, but there have been multiple reported issues about an excessive rise with FW 386.xx especially from AC86U (AC2900) model users.

    +1, AC2900 here

Yep, i do too. But were not talking about the AC68U here, rather its bigger brother the AC86U

Ahhh, the proof of the pudding is in the eating :) Did you notice any change in sound perception between the two? And how much can the CPU reasonably be cooled down using a fan, as an offset to room temps (when running idle)? I have a small (2 x 2 inch) fan screwed to the back of the router...

Why would it be better to push in? All computer stuff i owned sucked air out of the casing. Imo it's better to go with the flow and since hot air rises, it makes more sense to suck it out with a fan placed at or near the top or vice versa blow in at the bottom.

Thanks for your reply, but it's not much of an answer to my question.

Does anyone know how much of a difference in temps and noise to expect, using the same fan to suck air OUT vs. blow air IN? TIA

+1, My AC2900 is from 2018. Turning on EEE (pwr config --eee on) via script does help, but only a little. I've switched back and forth between 384.19 and any of the 386 versions, including the alpha's. Even with a fan attached to the router there's a significant rise in temp, when switching to...

"cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp" divided by 1000 Perhaps add that to a script which runs every ten minutes or so and save the output to a file.

    Factory reset AC-68U via SSH

I think a "nvram erase && reboot" will do. Be careful to SSH into the right node though.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 is now available

I tried to put the phone in different locations and changed nothing to the phone itself. It's barebone I first experienced it right after installing AiMesh on 384.19. My phone battery suddenly completely drained within 24 hours. Initially i thought the battery reached EOL, so i bought a new...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 is now available

Changes are made from the GUI on the main router. From there they propagate to the mesh node(s). However it's still possible to SSH directly into a node. It works the same way as SSH'ing into the main router, except you connect to the node's IP address instead. This can be done when it's online...
