pfSense (or other dedicated router) questions

I suppose it depends on what kind of "features." If you're referring to a bittorrent client, then it's meaningless to me on a router. Same thing for a NAS. However, if it means better reporting/statistics, then it means something. VPN is also a "feature" that seems appropriate to be on a...

pfSense (or other dedicated router) questions

Thanks for the links... I'm not sure if I want to build it myself or just order something pre-built. Regardless of if I do a pre-built or DIY, I don't think I want to get into another overseas ordering situation. (Been there, lost money, extreme amounts of time, and won't do it again for...

Not an endorsement whatsoever, but would something like this meet my wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JS6YZYO/?tag=snbforums-20

pfSense (or other dedicated router) questions

Are you sure? After YEARS, I'm still trying to come to grips with the idea that my "router" and my "wifi AP" are the same box. It annoys the &^%@#% out of me that wifi traffic doesn't pass through my switch... (Is that what you meant by it being a mind reset?) (I've actually been trying to...

pfSense (or other dedicated router) questions

The more I play, the less I'm appreciating this Asus AC3200 "router" I'm using. It does wifi great, and I have to admit I really like the live "adaptive QOS" meter and "traffic analyzer" statistic page (where I can see just how many GB's of "youtube" my daughter is watching.) However, I'm...

[Alpha] Preview builds for Asuswrt-Merlin 380.61

The area shown in your image is the lease time that your ISP is granting you... They run the DHCP server, so they dictate the lease times (and so there's no way for you to change it.) Typically, a DHCP client (your router) will attempt to renew a DHCP lease when it's time is 1/2 expired. So...

    improve ac3200 wireless range

Ground level... if you go outside and stand on the ground - that's "ground level." If your location is situated such that "ground" is higher in one spot than another, assume "ground" level as the highest ground that contacts the building. If you live in a desert, ground level is usually below...

Overclock and Merlin 380.58 / AC3200 can not make it work

Just to add a "me too" to this thread: My US AC3200 wasn't able to be o/c'd with the 1.0.1.6 CFE. After I managed to make the needed edits to 1.0.1.5 and go backward to it (which took several tries), o/c to 1200 was trivial (and actually helpful for maxing out ipv6 bandwidth.) Some hints: In...

    $200 Asus Router ac1900+. which one? AC3100, AC3200, AC1900

I just did a little overclock to my AC3200 (1 GHz to 1.2GHz) and now I'm able to to hit 175 megabits/sec on IPv6. :) Yes, it pegs one CPU core to 100%, but at least I feel a little better. ;) (IPv4 with CTF, QOS, etc, etc maxes out the bandwidth provisioning and barely gets to 50% usage on a...

    $200 Asus Router ac1900+. which one? AC3100, AC3200, AC1900

For the record, it's actually very hard to really saturate my comcast WAN bandwidth in "normal" usage (for me and my family.) Unless I'm actually TRYING to, of course. I'd love to have fiber, but more for the uplink than the downlink. 10up (12, actually) sucks when I'm trying to send very...

    ebtables / router question

I have an asus AC3200, and was playing around with the "Guest" network functions of the asuswrt firmware today. In particular, the functionality for allowing or disallowing intranet access. In the course of that playing around, I found one thing that I completely expected, and two things that...

    $200 Asus Router ac1900+. which one? AC3100, AC3200, AC1900

aye - CPU speed will have an impact for broadband (WAN) speeds over 150Megabit/sec. Doing some tests on my own network... with my older 4 stream cable modem (which maxes out at around 150 Mbps), I get 150 Mbps with the AC3200 (and pretty much any other router) regardless of any test specifics...

[RT-AC66U] no IPv6 data pass thru

Another obvious thing: On the router, "cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/forwarding". It should spit out a "1".

[RT-AC66U] no IPv6 data pass thru

Some guesses... "fe80:deleted:a168" and "2601:deleted:1" both belong to the router? You seem to have DHCPv6 running and it's not running from the router (but from another machine.) If so, I'd suggest examining the routing table on the router to ensure packets coming from link local are...

[RT-AC66U] no IPv6 data pass thru

Your default gateway is 192.168.0.1, but your DHCPv4 is 192.168.0.11. Is .1 your router and .11 an internal DHCP server? Is fe80:deleted:a168 the link local address of your router? Can you ping that address from your windows 10 machine? Are you familiar with the "tracert" tool in windows...

[RT-AC66U] no IPv6 data pass thru

okay.. Comcrap, AC66U router and windows 10. I don't know which cable modem your using, but the fact that you have to put it into a bridge mode tells me it's likely one of Comcast's leased Pieces of Fecal Matter. Here's my configuration for my AC3200... The configuration page should be similar...

Only Mac OS Users can connect on AC5300 but not Android

While my own experience has been that netgear firmware tends to be slightly more reliable, it also has it's problems (and is less flexible in my opinion.) On the other hand, I've found netgear (in general) is less responsive to fixing issues in their consumer and prosumer products than Asus...

Only Mac OS Users can connect on AC5300 but not Android

Steering back on topic.. (sorry about my soapbox up there...) For Asus (or any other consumer router that incorporates "bleeding edge" technology) the best advice I can offer is never buy anything right after it comes out. Wait until a product is at least a year old (if not older.) Not only...

Only Mac OS Users can connect on AC5300 but not Android

As a software engineer who just happens to work with wireless technologies for a living, this is a sore spot with me. I'm extremely sick of my "peers" blaming QE/QA departments for flaws in software. Too often, devs are forming an "us vs them" mentality when dealing with Q/A, and that is...
