Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta is now available

Dirty flashed from beta 2 to beta 3. At first, I didn't notice any difference at all, but then I saw that TENX had a great day on the NASDAQ, the fire in the fireplace was extra warm, and my glass of silver had turned to reposado, so yeah, this is a solid upgrade. Thank you, RMerlin!

Automating a home water main shutoff valve

Gotta add another shoutout to Zigbee over WiFi. Both are 2.4 GHz, but it still offloads a lot of garbage from your router. A Sonoff Zigbee bridge running Tasmota covers three levels, and it cost like $15. Properly thought out Zigbee mesh and some cheap, well-placed UPS really help. Wish I had...

I used to run both too, mainly because I love graphs. I feel like the more data you can look at, the better. Of course that is ridiculous, but I still hear the call of the chart from time to time.

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta is now available

This would provide a boost in speed and security, and decrease attack surface. For an added bonus, it would free up valuable programming time, so RMerlin can focus on the major 386 upgrade. Hopefully, the next release will also flash the LED lights in sync with the song Jingle Bells.

AC86U as router, AC68U as node. Dirty flashed the router with Beta 2, left the node running the official 386 release. Everything was working perfectly, and I was *really* hoping something would break so I could participate in troubleshooting, but, sadly, things seem to be running smooth all...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta is now available

I know what keysize and message digest are, but just never understood how stating keysize tells us anything. A Nerf gun shoots a much bigger gauge dart than a 12 gauge shotgun slug. Number of bits doesn't really matter, number of bits of *what* does.

Is it possible to put SSH on an AC-66U with stock firmware?

I assumed we cannot make custom modifications to the stock firmware without being able to enable custom scripts on JFFS. I might completely misunderstand the way the file system works, though. Looking around to see if there is a way to install software that isn't stock on the stock firmware, it...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta is now available

Hmmm, mine now shows 2.208 Updated : 2020/12/11 14:34. Maybe the version just hadn't updated before. Do you have anything in Skynet or elsewhere that might get in the way? Although obviously, that wouldn't cause a hash check fail...

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta is now available

Yes, it says last updated December 8th, and it proceeds to (seemingly) update. My AC-86U now shows 2.204. I didn't notice what it was before, but now it says "Updated : 2020/12/11 14:34"

Is it possible to put SSH on an AC-66U with stock firmware?

I need to be able to run commands locally with a script, and telnet just won't cut it. I saw here: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/updated-to-latest-380_3264-but-still-cant-enable-ssh.33267/ that, as it turns out, Asus didn't include the MIPS devices in their update to SSH. I have an old...

It does do the same on the surface, but isn't PPTP inherently insecure, even with L2TP?

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta is now available

I put the release version of the stock firmware on an AC68U and added it as a node to an AC86U running Merlin's beta, and the issues I was having before seem to be resolved. This could easily be due to something unrelated, maybe the additional factory reset or the second JFFS format, but it has...

I think that might be a little like saying "My computer cannot be programmed in C". You might not know C, but that doesn't mean that your computer doesn't "have" it. :)

Beta Asuswrt-Merlin 386.1 Beta is now available

I did, yes. I just temporarily turned off the AIMesh node, and will do a little reconfiguring today to use it as a wired AP. Having experienced a huge boost to how well everything plays together, I don't want to go back to 384. TL;DR: 386_beta > 384 (in my environment) even if it still isn't...

    WireGuard worth the risk ?

Wow, a crystal controlled Yaesu, a true oldie but goodie! Yeah, times sure changed. $20 for a USB stick that can do amazing things. I bought a handful of different ones, being certain that a handful wouldn't be enough for all the cool projects they were useful for. Fast forward a couple...

    WireGuard worth the risk ?

It was different though, right? At least back then, for our $2k we got a CIR, and if bandwidth dropped beyond a certain point, we got bonuses or refunds (in the form of credits, but still). Nowadays, many services won't even commit to a data rate, they just tell you a range you are likely to...
