Dual Stack home network pros and cons

Sorry, I got this confused with the other discussion. Let me correct my response: I agree, to the end user it doesn't matter. My point is, its an anycast issue. Its not an issue specific to IPv6 or IPv4.

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

If its what I am saying, its out of your control. It doesn't matter if its IPv4 or IPv6, its not something. you can fix on your end. If these are IPv6 servers and they are indeed anycast, you can see by doing a traceroute6 to the iP. There are ways to work around it. But, I doubt you will...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

Sounds like a routing issue. My guess is your DoT sever is using anycast routing, as it should. But the routing has sent you to one of its DNS servers somewhere else not in your region. I am having the exact same issue right now with another DNS service provider. Their IPv4 DNS servers are...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

The point is to get IPv6 connectivity. So you put the tunnel on another router from the vendor of your choice. Then you connect the WAN port of your ASUS router to the tunnel router. Your ASUS router won't know the difference. This would setup a nice testing environment. I have personally...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

I don't. know if this helps or not. But, even if his ISP doesn't support IPv6, he can go to Hurricane Electric and sign-up and use their IPv6 tunnel broker. They will assign you up to five delegated prefixes/subnets that are fully routable on the internet. The subnets are delegated and...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

Now, what I don't know is if the content you are trying to block is coming from IPv6 is it still blocked. I assume the filtering is by DNS domain or host. If that is the case, it should still work.

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

As stated earlier, I had a pfSense VM in-between the ASUS and the T-Mobile gateway. During another period, I had all IPv4 traffic running through the pfSense while IPv6 traffic was routing through the ASUS. With these two setups I had other goals than collecting the data. But, when I had...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

I'm not having this issue on my AC-5300 running IPv6.

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

It blocks on my AC-5300 with IPv6 enabled.

Then we should also remove this as a valid criticism when it was used as a justification to not enable IPv6. Thats what I think the real point was here. Earlier in this thread or maybe in the other thread, it was stated that your privacy is better with IPv4 behind NAT because your individual...

Also, DoT works without issue with IPv6 enabled. You can even use IPv6 address as your DNS servers.

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

This has been my understanding as well. Unfortunately, this also makes it more difficult to construct firewall rules using the web GUI.

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

I don't use every feature in Merlin. But let me answer what I do use: -Parental Controls: This works with IPv6. I wouldn't expect it to break since ASUS uses MAC address for enforcement and not IP -Adaptive QOS: works as normal -DNS Filter: Works as normal except the DNS server to use must...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

Understood. Most of the traffic from my house is TV streaming, YouTube, gmail, DNS. All of that is IPv6. But thats not the point. The point is, I have a reason to have IPv6 enabled. Once I enabled it, most of my traffic is IPv6. Statements were made earlier that most of your traffic will...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

I haven't measured it in a couple of months. But when I was doing so, I had a pfSense VM in-between to measure the traffic. I use over 2 1/2 TB a month. Most of it is IPv6.

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

Yes. Like anything else you enable on your router. Its just another attack vector. However, if you need IPv6, there is no reason to scare people into not using it unless you know of a weakness in ASUS routers specifically. If there is a weakness in ASUS routers specifically, then the answer...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

To me, its not a matter of pro or con. If you are in a situation where you need IPv6 and you also need to access local devices that only support IPv4, then dual stack is your answer. You will still need IPv4 connectivity to the internet unless you use other technologies such as DNS64/NAT64...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

That wasn't the question. I could post these all day long from other router vendors, OSes..etc that have vulnerabilities due to bugs and bad code. I subscribe to these CVE's as well. If you are saying stop using a feature or router because there has been a CVE for the device or feature, I...

Dual Stack home network pros and cons

Understood. And, I agree. Most of the time people have no need to turn it on and shouldn't. But, if there is a need I don't think its prudent to be saying with IPv6 being on, you are at risk if you have an ASUS router.
