Existing Asus RT-AC86U owner - considering the RT-AX82U

@OzarkEdge, @Tech9 Thanks for the info. Decided to go with another AX86U. Apologies for the unintentional hijack.

Existing Asus RT-AC86U owner - considering the RT-AX82U

Sure enough. My apologies and my mistake. My post regarded the AX86U. Regarding the AX86S, it seems to be coupled with the RT-AX86U (RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) here, and shows specs for the respective models...

Existing Asus RT-AC86U owner - considering the RT-AX82U

Hello again, Tech9. I bought the 86U about 1 1/2 yrs ago, and have had none of the issues mentioned here (hardware failure or otherwise). In fact, I've been very happy with it. Performance and range have been excellent. Perhaps the luck of the draw? At any rate, I've been looking at buying...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

As a followup, are there any further I should look at to fully secure the router, vpn and otherwise? I'd like to beef up security in whatever way I can, including on my other routers/network. Long ago, (the SMB site software was a lot different then) there was a fairly prolific guy here who...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

I did get the BI app working. In 'Server Settings', I saw that I forgot to put the port number in the LAN. All is well. Thanks, Colin and Threska49. I appreciate your patience and willingness to stick it out. I learned a lot through this process.

Odd for me, anyway, being a novice and gaining an education.

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Oddly, I can connect to the BI web interface via a browser, but: I had to add the openvpn virtual address as an exception in Windows Firewall. Under the VPN Server tab, I had to change the option under 'Client will use VPN to access' from 'Lan Only' to 'Both' (interent access and LAN). I...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Progress report. opvn file added and my router shows the ipad is connected to the vpn server. Now I'm working on getting BI on the device to work via the server.

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Just saw the post. Makes sense. I doubt I'll use another vpn server on this machine, but good to know for future reference.

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Could be a bug. At present, I'm attempting to open the file in the openvpn app on my iphone. I placed the file on my phone, went to the openvpn app, and am in the 'Import Profile', but there's no apparent way to import it. No buttons, and the 2 options aren't links. See screenshot.

Yes, I switched to server 2, entered the username and password and hit apply and it created the server. Then I switched to advanced and entered the port number I want it to use. That's where I am at present. I'm reading some material now about BI use with openvpn. Thanks for the link and the help.

Security for dedicated IP cam system

I just got back in the office and attempted to set up the vpn server, but when I enter username/pw and hit apply, it's rejected with the message, which states : ff:f...(IPv6 address) is not a valid IP. This is strange because I entered no address. It matches the default address in the Advanced...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Just got re-confirmation of that from support. He also said: "If you set up the VPN server it would allow you to access your whole local network securely from devices outside of your home. I don't think that is necessary if you can just use an app or web server for Blue iris to connect...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Sorry for my delay...busy season. I decided to pick up another router to accommodate vpn to cover the PC and IP cams. The router is an Asus RT-AX58U, but I'm having issues with BI connecting to the router when the vpn is active . I flashed the fw to the latest Merlin fw. I also have problems...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

You can use stunnel or ngrok with B.I., but at present, I'm looking at routers with vpn capability. I already have an acct with a reputable vpn, but have been using their app on the PCs I need to since I can disable it on demand, given that many sites reject vpn IPs. But I don't use the machine...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Not sure why I didn't think of the VPN in this case. As to the 'ancient' windows, in Win 11, does MS finally provide a way to turn off all data collection? Is it better to run the vpn through the router or OK to run it on the machine itself? The latter would be simpler here.

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Another good suggestion. I always run a vpn on my office/home systems, but usually from the PC, since VPN IPs break a lot of sites. This is a good solution for this situation since I only use the Cam machine and router for cams. And it can be employed even if I use Linux/Zoneminder. Thanks!

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Zoneminder looks worth checking out. I'm assuming my devices would connect via browser? Truth is, even though windows 8x and up may be touted as more secure than say, win 7 (which I love and still run on several machines without a single issue), the data collection isn't appealing. I've been...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

I'm reading some of the Blue Iris help docs now and it mentions some options: There are two ways to configure remote access. The first is most direct, but involves “opening a port” on your router to allow remote traffic to connect through to your PC on a specific port (channel). This may be a...

Security for dedicated IP cam system

Excuse my ignorance, but if the vpn is running on the device, how does that protect the system and cams, given the open port on the router? The vpn on the device still seems like a good idea, though. Currently, my android devices are using NetGuard, which uses the vpn.
