Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

@Tech9 Point taken, and is what I've decided to do for the present. Thanks to all for the help. I'd still like to look into pfsense when I get time to educate myself on how to configure/deploy it.

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

I appreciate all the info coming out of this thread. I think it's likely then, that it's all I'll need and saves me from building and finding a place for a larger box (also, the components I have are ATX). I just started looking at some youtubes on the 3100. There are also forums at the netgate...

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

I don't think the SG-3100 is overly expensive, and it's compact. Is it an inferior unit?

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

It's been a while since I flashed and configured with dd-wrt and set up the vlans, but I still have the configured router and the dd wrt documentation I can review. As to the static IPs, the additional IP is only $5/month, so worthwhile for me. I'm just at the beginning of researching PFsense...

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

I do have a few wrt54gL routers on which I flashed dd-wrt FW, because it supported vlans. Of course, those routers are a bit aged. I am considering building a pfsense machine (still using separate routers for the two static IPs). How difficult is it to configure vlans in pfsense? Are there...

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

Ah, I see. I misread SMB. Actually, I just ordered the AX86U. It has overwhelmingly good user reviews. As to the subnet routers, once I receive the 86U, I'll eliminate them and clean up the NW (I've been using 2 different brands of routers for the subnets...WRT54GLs and TP-Link TL-WR940Ns)...

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

I looked on the SNB home page but don't see 'SNB systems'. Do you have a link? Regarding too many routers, I plan on trimming down the subnets. My home/office NW needs have changed and I think I can do what I want with 2 routers using 2 static IPs. My wireless NWs can be isolated. There ought...

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

Thanks for the additional info. I've been looking at user reviews of the AX86U. A lot of people are happy with it, but mixed in are reviews complaining of intermittent reduction in wifi speeds and some other issues. But 85% are 5 stars and 3 stars and below are 1, 2 & 3%. I think it worth a...

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

Thanks for your response, avtella. Nice router, albeit a bit expensive. But my perspective is that buying quality saves the long run money. What's your opinion of the "lifetime free Asus Ai Protection Pro"? I generally breeze right past those mfr provided 'gimmicks'. As to the Pfsense box, I...

Router Recs for optimal reliability, security and speed

I have a commercial account with my IP and have 2 static IP addresses, which I'm not really using at present. My network in my Home/home office has been put together over the course of several years. Recently, I had to replace my cable modem and got a SB8200, which has two NW jacks (yes, I know...

Using subnet router wireless to connect to RT-N66U Lan

    Thanks - much appreciated!

Using subnet router wireless to connect to RT-N66U Lan

New question: Now that I know that subnets can connect to the gateway without any real changes to the router config, is there a way to configure the subnet to prevent connection, yet still allow internet access to the subnet? The routers of interest are the TP-Link TL-WR940N and Linksys WRT54GL.

Using subnet router wireless to connect to RT-N66U Lan

Yes. Apologies for that. I'm in the midst of my busy season and don't know whether I'm coming or going these days. What I've been doing is connecting via USB to the PC connected to the Asus. Unfortunately, the (phone) case I use makes it difficult, and I've pulled the end off of several cables...

Using subnet router wireless to connect to RT-N66U Lan

Thanks for your help. I was able to connect from the android (though tp link wireless) to the folder share I have on the PC (gateway router). Having done so, I find that's not exactly the experience I had hoped. I now see that what I want to do is drag and drop the files from phone to PC...

Using subnet router wireless to connect to RT-N66U Lan

Hi - thanks for your response. I'm about to leave the office, but will give proper attention to your comments this evening or tomorrow. To clarify my goals, I wish only to connect to my PC which is part of the Asus (192.168.1.1) LAN. No need to connect to the internet. I just need to be able to...

Using subnet router wireless to connect to RT-N66U Lan

I'll be in the field today, but can provide any other information necessary. I assume, since no one has stated contrarily, that accessing the Asus LAN (192.168.1.1) from the wireless network of the TL-WR940N subnet router (192.168.2.1) (and vice-versa) is doable. I've reviewed information...

Using subnet router wireless to connect to RT-N66U Lan

I have added another subnet router to my network and set it up. It works as expected and has internet access. I also set up the wireless, which also works fine.. I hope to use this this subnet router's wireless network to allow my smartphones to wirelessly access the PC on the gateway router...

    ipleak.net DNS leakage

My router is configured to use a vpn on one of my subnets. I have auto connect to DNS server turned off in the WAN tab and have manually entered my VPN's DNS address in the 1st field and an OpenNIC DNS address in the 2nd. IP location is hidden as should be.But ipleak.net shows 4 DNS servers...

    VPN services recommendations

What you say may be true, but it was the best source of info and 'objective' review I could find. Most of the other info I could find were affiliate articles/reviews. Plus, there is a comparison excell spreadsheet that lists all features if each. Do you know of other, reliable sources of...
