Mesh network Wi-Fi: have lots of ethernet drops (Orbi questions)

Something like an EnGenuis could go in spot #3, and keep my existing WAP/Airport Express. Alternately, I'd just put a Orbi router (as WAP) in spot #1, and Orbi satellite in spot #2. If I got a 3-pack, I could put the 2nd satellite in some other spot, way down the road.

Mesh network Wi-Fi: have lots of ethernet drops (Orbi questions)

Thanks for the EnGenius link, Tim. I think I tried a single SSID in the past, but that was not family friendly. My wife would get "stuck" on the Airport Express, when she went to the front of the house. Happens the same when I used different SSIDs, but at least I know that I'm connected to the...

Mesh network Wi-Fi: have lots of ethernet drops (Orbi questions)

Hi Tim, My Cisco WAP4410N and Airport Express don't have any handoff between them, I use separate SSIDs for each. It's the devices that don't reliably handoff between the two. The AE is hardwired to the LAN, so I was strictly using it as a way to extend my network with multiple access points...

Mesh network Wi-Fi: have lots of ethernet drops (Orbi questions)

Hi all, It's been about a year since I asked a similar question, and we have lots of new Wi-Fi mesh devices available. I have read most (all?) of the reviews here, thank to Tim. So my network and "need" is pretty simple: I have a AT&T U-verse Pace 5268AC router, for internet/VoIP (not IPTV...

Extending, or WAP options for outdoor area

Yeah, just a coverage area 50'x50' in the back yard. And the Apple AirPort Express can be right up against the wall to the backyard. So as long as it can get through one wall, it should be able to provide the coverage I need. I'll know in a couple of days if this will work, else I'll go back to...

Extending, or WAP options for outdoor area

After thinking about this whole 'same vs. separate' SSID concept for a while, I'm left with this conclusion: One should always use separate/distinct SSIDs with this type of consumer-grade equipment. The clients will hand off appropriate (if they can), and you still get the option to...

Extending, or WAP options for outdoor area

Some of those brands you mentioned are quite pricey! Late last night, I had another thought on how to approach my issue. I've been meaning to buy an Apple Airport Express to get a nice Ethernet audio-only AirPlay receiver for my (indoor) Denon receiver that feeds outdoor audio. The cool thing...

Extending, or WAP options for outdoor area

Yes, that is my concern. No problem on different SSID names, rather getting my devices (mostly iPhones, iPads, occasional laptops) to swap might be an issue. The main WAP signal is strong enough out there (backyard) where I don't think the devices will switch automatically. My current (indoor)...

Extending, or WAP options for outdoor area

Thanks, I'll check those out now. Great. I have a TRENDnet TPE-TG44g PoE+ and a spare port, it has served me well. My only concern about running two WAPs is the SSID conflict, i.e. handoff from one, to another. Can someone point me to an article/link where it describes how to best manage this?

Extending, or WAP options for outdoor area

Hello again friends, I have a modest sized house that has been perfectly served by a centrally-located Cisco WAP-4410N (PoE). I have just begun a backyard remodel project, which will include an expanded backyard patio/pergola/seating area that is about 75 feet from where the WAP is located...

    Google OnHub Announced & Reviewed

Yup. And improving physical placement of the device is typically more important than having the best CPU, antennas, etc. My wireless is doing pretty well right now with a Cisco WAP-4410N. It is older, and doesn't have 802.11ac. My primary WiFi devices are an iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Plus...

    Google OnHub Announced & Reviewed

I like this rather minimalist (dare I say, Apple-like) design approach from Google. On paper, it looks rather good. But I came here because I knew you guys would be able to point out any fatal flaws or forward-looking features that it might be missing. Obviously a hands-on test will be the real...

Looks kinda cool to me. I think the device-prioritization feature could be useful. Is that the "congestion sensing" antenna?

    Help with AC68R + Uverse + Switch

Hi, It sounds like your U-verse box is getting the simulcast feed, but the multicast feed is being blocked by the ASUS, which is why it cuts out after 5 seconds. When they send you the wireless box, you must use the wireless transmitter that comes with it. Make sure you connect that to...

    U-verse + IGMPv3 snooping, and router/switch architeture

Sure, I hope I can be of some help. When I started, I was a bit green, i.e. I had never terminated Category cable before, although I pulled plenty of wire. By the time I was all done, I felt like a pro! The biggest surprise was the expense, from re-designing the network. By the time I...

    U-verse + IGMPv3 snooping, and router/switch architeture

I was fortunate enough to "redesign" my entire home network from scratch, even though I just moved into my house 3 years ago, which is also when I had my initial U-verse installation. I probably planned out the architecture for ~2 months before I really got started on it. I love having...

    Q on CAT5, 6 DIY cables

That's a good video. I taught myself how to crimp Cat6, watching videos like these, when I re-wired my house about a month ago. Never used a "sled" before to make a cable end? Of course I use a liner, which takes some practice to use effectively.
