To VPN or not to VPN?

@umarmung - thank you for this break down! So I think maybe VPN server is what I should think about. If I can get the router pretty well locked down that should give me a decent remote solution. The only real downside is that my uplink speeds are pretty slow.

Meet Algo, the VPN that works

I also wanted to hear more about @unclebuk 's question regarding the difference between running Algo and using a VPN provider. I can understand that there is a big benefit to controlling both ends of the VPN link, but their is still the question of the security of the virtual machine you run...

To VPN or not to VPN?

Thank you guys for responding! Oh, and to be clear I am planning on moving away from the stock firmware and running RMerlin's version at some point (probably the next release). I can see that I am definitely confused about the value of VPN. It sounds like if you don't control both ends then...

To VPN or not to VPN?

I'm currently enjoying pretty fast internet (over 500Mbps) and I have a router that should be able to run a VPN client pretty well. I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on the cost/benefit of a personal VPN for the home: This is assuming I can find a relatively low latency VPN with...

    Need Purchasing Advice

@coxhaus - Thank you for the recommendation. It looks like I have my Arris modem/router running in modem bridged mode. If I have any trouble with it I'll definitely get the SB8200. @EmeraldDeer - Yes, it looks like I'm running in 2x2 AC mode (866 link rate). Based on other numbers reported I...

    [Asus RT-AX88U] Experiences & Discussion

@PhantomRay - Very interesting reported number for the GT-AC5300. I was very curious about getting higher than the ~640Mbps d/l speeds I'm seeing now and I realized two things: (a) my Laptop has an Intel AC-8026 dual band adapter with a maximum theoretical limit of 867Mbps and (b) the peak d/l...

    Need Purchasing Advice

Okay, I figured out a little bit. It looks like QAM is enabled on the unit - I'll check to see if my laptop supports it: EDIT: Looking at my laptop, I have an Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 adapter which I think goes up to QAM 256. Not to say I won't upgrade some day though ;)

@EmeraldDeer - how would I confirm that I have 1024 QAM? And what should I do to take advantage of it? I saw this in the log: May 5 05:05:06 kernel: dhd_runner_attach: Tx Offload - Enabled, Ring Size = 1024 May 5 05:05:06 kernel: dhd_runner_attach: Rx Offload - Enabled, Ring Size = 1024...

    [Asus RT-AX88U] Experiences & Discussion

@PhantomRay - to be clear - I don't believe at all in "future proof" -which I guess makes me think I look pretty silly buying the RT-AX88U router. Honestly I thought I was getting a much better router that happened to support the up coming AX protocol, not so-so performing router that mainly...

    [Asus RT-AX88U] Experiences & Discussion

@PhantomRay - yes I was actually expecting to get closer to 1Gbps over AC with the RT-AX88U. I admit that the first router that drew my attention was also the GT-AC5300. Having three bands would be really nice. The price is also very close to the RT-AX88U. So is the inherent trade-off with...

    [Asus RT-AX88U] Experiences & Discussion

I'm not sure if I can add any rigorous measurements to the discussion - let me know if there is a better way of measuring this. My ISP is RCN and I have there "one gig" service which does give me over 900mbps if I'm attached directly to the modem (upload is between 20-30mbps...). I'm in a...

With a little more tuning (i.e. following @L&LD and @RMerlin configuration notes) I'm at over 640Mbps. So far so good! EDIT: @EmeraldDeer - looking at your signature, there are a few things I will try next (amtm, Diversion, etc). I might wait for the next RMerlin firmware release though - I'm...

    Need Purchasing Advice

Well, that was easy! I hooked up a cable directly to the Arris DG3450A and logged into the setup page. After scratching my head for a while found a button right in front of me titled something like "run in bridged mode". Throwing this switch seemed to do the trick. The good news is that (at...

    Need Purchasing Advice

@RMerlin, @beboptrumpet and @Datalink : Thank you guys for the help, I think my way forward is clear: I'll either try to get RCN to reprovision my Arris dg3450a so it runs in bridged mode, or I'll buy the Arris SB8200. I'm actually leaning towards the second option because it may be difficult...

Thank you @RMerlin, I will look into that. In general do you recommend doing this or do you think it doesn't really make a difference?

    Need Purchasing Advice

@Datalink - thank you for that info - I will monitor how things go with the RCN Arris modem/router. I wonder if there is a performance hit simply having a second router in the path. If there is a way to turn it off or bypass it I will do that. I have the RT-AX88U up and running and it seems...

    Need Purchasing Advice

@RMerlin thank you for the Thompson/Technicolor recommendation - I don't see those modems around here. It looks like most of them are Motorola, Netgear or Arris. I'm not sure how much of the gig internet download speed I'm really going to end up with. My upload speed is abysmal no matter what.

    Need Purchasing Advice

Thanks you @beboptrumpet and @RMerlin The Arris SB8200 is currently selling for around 180 USD, so it would take almost 3 years to pay for itself at the current rental fee. I would consider it if the Arris router is a poor enough performer - stripping out their router is tempting.

Thank you @RMerlin ! Yes, RCN was going to charge me $5/mo for wifi - so I got them to drop that... It turns out they use the same DOCSIS 3.1 modem and just disable wifi. So I still have a $6/mo modem rental charge. RCN is friendly to people who want to use their own DOCSIS 3.1 modem (BYOM)...

    Need Purchasing Advice

So I went about this the wrong way - being too impulsive for my own good. I purchased a RT-AX88U that I may end up returning. In short I need to purchase: A DOCSIS 3.1 modem An AC wifi router I have no clue about the modem, except that it has to work with RCN. I am currently renting their...
