ASUS Wireless - AI-Mesh BIND feature

I know this is an old thread, but I haven't seen much discussion of this feature elsewhere. Re c4, the "bind" does *not* do what it says on the tin. My nodes are set up A -> B -> C, and I have a fixed wireless bridge at the far end of the house that's bound to C. The problem is that the B->C...

Upgrading from and old 802.11n router (AC or AX?)

Oh I should have clarified, I wasn't talking about any particular "low-end" AX device. AFAIK Asus does not make a "cheap" router, just "pretty good" up to "very good". What I meant was, don't buy the very cheapest AX you can find just because it's AX, when AC from a good brand will serve you...

Upgrading from and old 802.11n router (AC or AX?)

I can't imagine anybody buying a router every year. From a quick Google, 802.11n (wifi 4) was finalized in 2009, AC (wifi 5) in 2013, and somebody upthread said that they just finalized AX (wifi 6). So, plan on a new router every ~5-7 years, and you can keep up with changing standards. Even...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

Just to add a data point, my "zombie node" problem could also have been a bad cable -- I did move the DHCP server but the *reason* I moved it is because I wanted to switch from wired to wireless backhaul, because I knew the wired backhaul was dodgy. (You can't have your DHCP server attached to...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

It's interesting that it shows up in the app. So, to be clear: * you see the zombie in the app * you don't see it in the web interface ("AiMesh" page)? Or it's listed but greyed out / disabled / offline? * Devices plugged into the zombie are fine * Devices cannot connect to the zombie via...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

The initial setup wizard should let you pick AP mode instead of AiMesh, if you really want, but you shouldn't have to do that. Have you tried a full factory reset of both devices, set up from scratch? I know it's a pain but it's the first thing everybody on these boards is going to ask you to do.

    RT-AX92u - New firmware - 3.0.0.4.386_41712

I did the dirty upgrade from 41535 yesterday, and so far I've at least had no more stackdumps in my logs. (I did get the "PSM watchdog" error twice, though.) Tentatively optimistic? If it's stable for all my devices, I'm going to leave it alone. If I start dropping connections or having...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

Now be fair, I've been using PuTTY for the thick end of two decades and they only shipped a built-in SSH client in 2018, if 10 seconds of googling got that right. (Otherwise, absolutely, don't install an extra program if there's a decent built-in solution!)

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

Boy, Win10 contains multitudes, doesn't it? I've used WSL bash, but that's a big feature to suggest adding in a general-purpose forum like this one. Everybody's got PowerShell these days, though. I didn't realize it had its own SSH client, which is neat. (FYSA, apparently you have to use...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

I have to imagine that this would be pretty far down their todo list, because if your node is in a state where you can view its web interface but it's not showing up on the main router's AiMesh page, something has gone very wrong already. (Also, if it's any indication of likelihood, the one and...

    RT-AX92u - New firmware - 3.0.0.4.386_41712

I'm going to keep an eye on this, my main AP has been logging mystery errors for a while now on 41535 so I'm thinking of doing an automated (dirty) upgrade to 41712, then if it's still flaky, maybe a full factory reset of everything over the weekend. (On that note: I know you're not supposed to...

RT-AX92U 5GHz-2 can only use DFS channels?

I do use Smart Connect, which on my AX92U is only possible with 2.4 + 5-1. 5-1 only supports channels 36-64, and 5-2 only supports 100-140, so it's not possible for both 5GHz bands to choose the same channel. I don't think I've ever seen it using 5-1 for backhaul, but then I don't think I've...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

@Daddio I have had the same experience as you. The way I understand it, the network ports act as a mostly-unmanaged switch, effectively (with an asterisk for the WAN port in certain modes). When a node is "offline", as described in this thread, it's not because the device isn't running, but...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

@SignedAdam did you try SSH yet? Administration -> System, Enable SSH -> LAN only, disable password login, paste your public key in Authorized Keys. If you're on Mac or Linux, you should already have SSH and associated utilities. If you're on Windows and need a client, PuTTY is my go-to, and...

RT-AX92U exceptions in log, blank AiMesh page

It's running 3.0.0.4.386_41535-g1caa24a on a "dirty" upgrade, the previous version was a full reset. It's actually gotten worse since I made this post, with a couple of spontaneous reboots. In reverse order: there was a "psm watchdog" dump this morning at 09:38, and last night at 21:37...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

Well, the thing is, that's kind of my take too, but I'm already past the return period for the hardware so I'm going to make the best of it. It's mostly OK, most of the time, but I really do wish it could do a better job recovering from error conditions without my help.

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

I have a theory here -- I don't think it will actually *help* anyone but it may give some context. I have a mesh of 3x RT-AX92U. One of these nodes was, until recently, hooked up via wired backhaul, but it used a wire run that was installed by a particularly forward-thinking homeowner in the...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

I don't think he explained exactly what "locked up" looks like. Does it stop responding to pings? If SSH were enabled, could he still log in that way? What about the web interface (e.g. that "node firmware upload" mini-page)? One of my least favorite things about mesh is the amount of magic...

AiMesh Node going OFFLINE after a few weeks

@SignedAdam if you click through to Administration -> Firmware Upgrade, then look at the list of nodes, you'll see an "Upload" link for each node, under the current version. This opens a new window into the web UI for that particular node, at {node IP}/AiMesh_Node_FirmwareUpgrade.asp...

RT-AX92U 5GHz-2 can only use DFS channels?

I guess I should have asked explicitly, is that... OK? Normal? Common? It seems to me like you'd want your backhaul to be as stable as possible, so if all else fails maybe like have the radio that's only capable of DFS channels make a Smart Connect bond with the 2.4 band, and let the 5-1 band...
