The Ars Technica semi-scientific guide to Wi-Fi Access Point placement

Rule 5: Above head height, please This is really a practical rule; I never understood AP's that are plugged into 120V outlets that are 12 to 14 inches above the floor. * And, the manufacturers suggest/show this location for many of the small AP's that are on the market. I do not know if the...

    Simple (fundamental) Performance Question

Simple question: What could one do to improve / increase the performance of a router ? Note this is more academic than an actual need... The way I look at it is the router is like a fire hose. You turn it on and you have max. throughput to begin with. The only thing you can do is reduce...

    Phicomm K3C AC1900 MU-MIMO Gigabit Router Reviewed

Tim, can this be a 'mischief' point of entry/or collection at a future date? That is, can Phicomm at a later date change the properties and create a collection or capture of info you'd prefer them not to have? ( just thinking out loud) thanks!

Firmware update - Rev number mean anything?

got it.... thanks. So I got the tail end i.e. g3291119 and that will I.D. to the corresponding change in code ( flag). The front end i.e. 3.0.0.4.386_25217 just looks like the iteration level of firmware. I was hoping it would tell me ~something like~ year, month , day , and the '25217'...

Firmware update - Rev number mean anything?

thanks... and since I am not familiar with this, I looked it up: At its core, the Git version control system is a content addressable filesystem. It uses the SHA-1 hash function to name content. For example, files, directories, and revisions are referred to by hash values unlike in other...

Firmware update - Rev number mean anything?

Hello folks, Just did an update... Simple question. Is there any logic/intelligence to the Rev numbers used by ASUS? Being an X-engineer ( mechanical) , when we numbered projects/engineering drawings and their revisions there was a code/sequence to the number so one could tell a few things about...

    DNS address - which one ~ rules~

ahhh! and that was what I was looking for. Then you do not have to monkey around with all the devices. you also can fine tune a home network (me thinks) in a more reasonable way to see if there are any performance improvements with the testing of different DNS services. Yet from an academic...

    DNS address - which one ~ rules~

Folks, If I set my router to a specific DNS address ( say , Google 8.8.8.8) and another device ( notebook or desktop computer) has a different DNS address set in their config, which one rules? Is there a hierarchy ? Any thoughts on this? thanks!!!

Asus ZenWifi 6 (AX) Router Security Question

thanks... yes, a few things you offered I understood e.g. router keeping a copy of past firmware on board is not done. ( I would have made copies of the firmware to my hard drive, off-router location). Also, I was under the impression firmware 'upgrade' was non selectable . That is, you...

Asus ZenWifi 6 (AX) Router Security Question

I didn't want to start a new string for this (simple) question. I see where I can restore a previous config on my existing ZenWifi 6 Router. Yet I fail to see where I can go back to the previous firmware rev. A> Is that possible? B> I see where I can save my config to restore, yet I do not...

    Cooling Asus ZenWiFi

    Cooling Asus ZenWiFi

Folks, I am thinking through the best way to cool off my router. I keep it in the garage with some other gear. I do this to avoid the clutter, wiring, bla-bla-bla. Since I live in San Diego the temps in the garage are reasonable for 8 months out of the year . For 4 months the temps may be bit...

ZenWifi AX No 160mhz for backhaul

I know this seems a bit parochial but look at the following Band is 5GHz-2 Channel Bandwidth see below. Note the selection of a check box [] is that available to you? & Note the nomenclature on " Hide SSID" - if you disable, it should be visible to a device Again , this is simple...

ZenWifi AX No 160mhz for backhaul

In post number 14 above and looking to line 3 "BAND"... can you select different Bands e.g. 2.4 GHz , 5GHz-1 ( that is one section) ; the next pull down is 5 GHz-2 ? AND , when I setup my system (Zenwifi AX8) on the initial startup I chose "Enable Smart Connect " as my initial...

[Maylyn - Networking] ASUS ZenWiFi XT8

Simple question: Looking at my ZenWifi Router I see " Signature Version" under firmware version shown below. This is new to me ( as a past Netgear router user). Can some one explain what this is and how it may differ from a general Firmware version update? Thanks! ( edited: removed pic to...

    Is Anyone Using MU-MIMO?

Not proved wrong... Took some digging and patience, but got it done. NOT a router issue, but was ~ suspect~ as that was the last significant change to the 'mix' of technology in my home. I will not explain as it then would be a cell phone conversation and take us off topic of MU MIMO thanks!!!!
