cant seem to find a good router..

Well, easy is in the eye of the beholder maybe. Netgate's documentation is quite complete, and for my taste miles ahead of the docs from Asus, Ubiquiti, or anything else I've worked with in this space. But it might be a bit of a shock if you've never set up individual firewall rules before...

cant seem to find a good router..

Maybe something running pfSense or OPNsense? You can bring your own mini-PC-type hardware, or if you're not into figuring out exactly what will work, I'd recommend one of Netgate's pfSense "appliance" boxes. I bought their 4200 a few months ago and have been quite pleased.

Advice sought regards best solution for providing ethernet to detached garage. Homeplug vs Mesh vs P2P Bridge?

Not entirely following your thinking here. It does little good from a security standpoint for the garage devices to be plugged in via ethernet if that wire just leads to a wireless bridge: the bridge's connection to the house is still jammable. And an exposed ethernet line can be cut. A...

How can I successfully change the CR1000A router PW?

Mine was free too ;) I don't know Netgear's product line that well. Are these actually APs (without router functionality) or just consumer wifi routers? If they are SMB-style APs then there should be some way to manage them centrally. The central management thing is what you are looking...

How can I successfully change the CR1000A router PW?

TBH ... if you're the kind of person who wants that level of control and monitoring, I bet you're not going to be happy with the CR1000A for long. (No shade intended: I am, and I wasn't.) It's nice hardware, or at least the specs look good on paper, but the software is just really bare bones...

Advice sought regards best solution for providing ethernet to detached garage. Homeplug vs Mesh vs P2P Bridge?

If you do happen to have a cable-TV coax line out to the garage, MoCA is a great choice as @krkaufman says. I'm betting you don't though. Powerline (homeplug) might work, although it works best if you can put the two modules on the same power circuit --- and if your place was wired by someone...

How can I successfully change the CR1000A router PW?

Annoying. Apparently some UI designer at Verizon thinks he's improving security this way. You could try complaining but I'm sure this choice stems from a father-knows-best attitude that will cause them to ignore you. The one good thing about it is that there's no strong reason to log into...

    6ghz reinforced concrete wall penetration

Here's some actual data for you, taken from WiFi Explorer on a MacBook, reading signal strength from UniFi U6 Enterprise APs: closest AP (same room, maybe 12ft away): 5GHz: -40 dBm 6GHz: -34 dBm next closest AP (perhaps 30ft, two drywall-on-steel-studs walls to penetrate): 5GHz: -79 dBm 6GHz...

How can I successfully change the CR1000A router PW?

Which web browser are you using, and have you tried others? I've seen won't-take-pasted-data occasionally with fields for credit card numbers, but not passwords (and I do copy-n-paste passwords a lot). Not sure about the CR1000A; don't think I've tried it there. EDIT: I wonder too if clearing...

How can I successfully change the CR1000A router PW?

Quoting from the CR1000A user manual: 7.1b/ HOW DO I CHANGE THE PASSWORD ON MY VERIZON ROUTER UI? To change the password: 1. On the main screen, select Advanced, then select Users in the Utilities section. 2. Click the Edit in the Action column. The User Settings page displays. 3. Edit the user...

Only Buy Routers Released In The Past One or Two Years?

So I take it you've read every line of pfSense, OpenWRT, and the Linux kernel (or whatever else you use)? Your point 1 is utter nonsense for most of us; we don't have the time or abilities to vet all our system infrastructure. To be clear, I prefer open source too, but I don't fool myself that...

Only Buy Routers Released In The Past One or Two Years?

Not to mention that you may find yourself helping to debug a beta-quality product. Sure, if that sounds like fun, go for it --- but if you just want reliable wifi, first-generation gear should be looked at warily. Over on the Ubiquiti forums, I've been discouraging noobs from buying any of the...

Do You Factory Reset After Firmware Updates?

Sure, I'm not maintaining that nobody ever needs to do hard resets. I'm saying that it's a last resort when your device is bricked or there's otherwise no other way to get there from here. Asus is pretty much the only gear I've dealt with in a lifetime of computing where there was an idea that...

Do You Factory Reset After Firmware Updates?

Reasonably well-written, well-tested firmware should be able to cope with updating settings from a prior version, at least as long as the "prior" isn't too far back. The idea that users should routinely reset and re-enter settings by hand is an absolute indictment of the competence of the...

Advices about custom dns in a home lan

Same as @microchip : there's no need to run IPv6 DNS yourself. As for the reliability point, the standard solution is to have two DNS servers and never reboot both of them at the same time.

Issues with Verizon CR1000B, Hitron MoCA HT-EM5 adpaters, and Netgear RAX70

I'm feeling a bit suspicious about using the FiOS router's coax port. I have a CR1000A, which I believe to be substantially the same hardware, and its user manual basically disclaims compatibility with everything: Warning: The coax port is intended for connection to Verizon devices only. It...

Upgrading from wifi 5 to wifi 6 and looking for suggestions

6GHz does have shorter range than 5GHz. That can be a feature as well as a bug: in dense environments like high-rise apartments, it helps to limit the number of neighbors who can interfere with you. It sounds like you're not in a situation where that helps you though. The other thing about...

Upgrading from wifi 5 to wifi 6 and looking for suggestions

Really it's impossible to give useful recommendations with so little information. For starters: What's the speed of your internet connection? Do you foresee upgrading it anytime soon? How many wifi clients do you have? How many are wifi 6, 6E, or 7 capable? Do you foresee those answers...

Solved Help with Unusual WiFi Connection Issue

Not sure about the "below AX" part. AFAICT everything Apple has made since about 2018 can do WPA3. I have a primary SSID which is WPA3-only, and I'm successfully running all my Apple gear on that, including old iPads (ac generation) and watches (WiFi 4 only). I have to run a separate WPA2...

Solved Help with Unusual WiFi Connection Issue

I think your real problem is that all of those wifi signals are awful, with the exception of the last one at -52dBm. Anything worse than about -65dBm is not going to provide a high-quality wifi experience, and I bet your wifi dongle is ranking them all as about equivalent signal-wise. Don't...
