    The Gnuton version (fork) is compatible with XT8, check the dedicated topic. Merlin's add-ons (check my sig for some) are working too. This is the most stable and reliable FW I've installed since I own the XT8 pairs. Including with add-ons running.

    SLC is always superior in terms of reliability and may be here a solution, I suspect cell management id done differently however (open question). In terms of price vs an SSD is this interesting?

    The SSD will always be the reliable option and giving statistics about thumb drives will put you at risk with any statement :). Never the less I took this way with a Samsung fit plus 64GB. The setup runs for about a month so it won't give you any confidence in the solution.

    Don't, as mentioned by @Aiadi use the reset procedure, the one wih the WPS button avaialble on Asus site or in this forum worked for me. I confirm the Asus APP still working after.

    XT8 and AX on 5-1

    XT8 pair here too, wired backhaul so 2.5/5-1/5-2 available. I had some issues 2/3 FW ago with the band switching (jumping between all 3 bands) in a specific spot of my house with my iPhone, last FW fixed it. No change in the wireless settings at all. Now I'm on the last Merlin/Gnuton FW, so far...

    Did you use the WPS button for the reset (procedure on Asus website and here). If not please do, if so be sure to wait long enough with the button pressed. The behavior si no changed whatever the FW is.

This is my 1st attempt to setup Gnuton FW and addon on my set of XT8 and I took an USB stick (Samsung Fit USB 3.1 64GB, 12 euro on Amazon).     May be helpful if anything goes wrong but normaly a flash+WPS reset is enough. With no restore of previous backup but only manual setting.

    Hi, I'm not using it myself yet but I think it's possible with the VPN director section in Merlin FW.

    Almost in the same boat for my pair of XT8. I would like to give a chance to Gnuton FW with all the benefit I think I can ave with codel QoS and nice features coming from Merlin. Temptation is high.

    Need Advise Shared Folder or Home Folders

    Both may fit but if I do it I would create one shared folder with read and traverse permissions only for all users, then a subfolder per user and R/W permission only for the concerned user.

    Not denying a possible problem, only what I noticed by my side: the error appeared after a not so young update, cannot remember which one. But at the same time other devices are accessed so I never took time for it.
