How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 1: Introduction

I'm really looking forward to the other parts of the Article, Tim. This is one of the biggest questions I've been wrestling with for the past while - how a more or less standard 'PC' fares against consumer NAS's. I just picked up a couple 1TB Seagate drives to throw in an Athlon64 3200 system...

Grabbing a byte for a bit

I, er, just multiply or divide by 8. But this was, and I imagine is still a big problem for companies. I had to calm my neighbor down the other day because he wasn't getting the advertized '5Mbit/s' downloads speeds from his ISP. He was expecting 5MB/s. Sigh.

A whole heap of demanding streaming !!!!!!!!!!!

There's a few streaming apps out there for Macs as well, so a bit of searching and you can probably find something pretty quickly. In fact, I frequently read Lifehacker and they had a good article on doing this not too long ago. That's probably a good start. By JSP front end, I basically mean...

A whole heap of demanding streaming !!!!!!!!!!!

There's a couple decent streaming applications with fairly good web based interfaces that are out there - many of them freeware. I honestly can't name anything specifically off the top of my head, but there are a lot. A google search like this will get you going. The problem is that these kinds...

What to do with old pc's : dumb tablet terminal??

I haven't seen virtually any bluetooth devices that would act as a monitor to another system. I've seen a few 'dumb wireless tablets' in the industrial space, but they aint cheap. I dont really think such a thing exists, at least not in the consumer space, and nto at any sort of reasonable cost...

A Powerful Open Source UTM: Untangle Gateway Reviewed

+1, I called Astaro once for some basic info, and then they wouldn't stop calling me every month wondering if/when I wanted to purchase. The guy on the other end of the line was usually pretty nice, but they sure were trying to reel in a sale. I haven't looked into Astaro for a while, but...

Norton and Windows OneCare don't like my NAS drive for backups

Usually it's just backup software that wasn't specifically written or tested to write over a network share, or generally buggyness relating to networks. I've seen some backup programs that are fantastic at backing up over mapped network drives and UNC shares, and others not so much. Most...

Norton and Windows OneCare don't like my NAS drive for backups

Regarding Desktop 2 - I've come across this a couple times with various programs not liking the mapped network drive until you connect to it or put in credentials. What you could probably do to resolve this is a simple batch script, which you can set as a scheduled task in XP if you like (to run...

    Docsis 3.0

Our major cable provider up here is on Docsis. I've had several 5100's and 5120's over the years and they've served me well. I imagine their 6120 units will be solid.

A Powerful Open Source UTM: Untangle Gateway Reviewed

Wow, great article Stonecat! Well done. It's too bad I'm not in the consulting biz anymore because I sure would like to give untangle a go. Maybe I'll do a backup of my pfsense config and give untangle a try at home, although as you point out, it's probably a little much for home use - but...

Looking for a sub $1000 double redundant, self supporting novice level system.

Er, I was more referring to NTFS drives from a PC/Server RAID controller. Didn't really give any thought about 'other' file systems that would be used on a NAS. I know there's a few ways out there like Ext2 IFS for windows for reading Ext2/3 natively in windows. Most others are also readable...

Internet Filter for Different level for different user

Most other routers can do what you're wanting to do. I know the Linksys WRT54G's can do internet access policies based on IP addresses, as can most other Linksys routers. I've played a bit with the d-link DIR-655 and it should be able to do it as well. Most other consumer level routers should be...

Looking for a sub $1000 double redundant, self supporting novice level system.

In most cases I'm aware of, yes. There haven't been many RAID1 controllers of note where I haven't been able to take the drive and stick it in another machine. Keep in mind Windows won't likely boot and all that jazz, but the data will be readable.

    Cascaded Routers?

That'll do it. Great advice. You can turn virtually any router into a simple 'switch' simply by disabling DHCP, and making sure it doesn't have the same address as another router (i.e. multiple 192.168.1.1 devices). With that, a router basically turns into a switch / Access-Point, and you can...

    Newbie N Bridge/AP Help Please!

I'm assuming your existing wireless router isn't wireless N? You 'could' do what you mention (PC-to-PC ad-hoc), but the less complicated setup would be to get a wireless N router or access point and simply plug it in upstairs to your switch (if you get a router, you have to disable DHCP and...

    Docsis 3.0

The integrated gateways usually suck pretty bad. Horrible interfaces, horrible control, horrible everything. If you want anything at least half decent, you'll want them as 2 separate devices.

Simple home WAN setup, suggestions wanted.

Like Tim says, you'd probably have a reasonable experience on wireless, although for gaming and large file transfers (a lot of which I do at home personally), wireless will leave you wanting. For what it's worth, go wired. Wireless obviously has some nice advantages, but if this setup is going...

    double nat vs vlan

+1 for pfsense. You can do pretty much everything you need right out of the box with a good router/firewall like pfsense. With home user routers, you're basically forced to do funky double-nat setups. For the cost of PC hardware these days, it's hard not to recommend something like pfsense. You...

    Ethernet cabling...

No difference between regular PVC and plenum to my knowledge. It's just the wrapping that makes it more fire and heat resistant. I would think if you have at least 6-8 inches between the electrical and data you should be fine. That's not a scientific answer - that's a guesstimation.

Vista / XP home workgroup setup?

Hmmm, don't think they need to 'match'. I've noticed if Simple File Sharing is off, that's when XP will start harassing you for credentials on the network. But as such, you should just be able to plug in a password and it should authenticate properly. If Simple File Sharing is ON, anything you...
