    DIR-655 as an access point

I have a DIR-655, used as an access point no less, and I've set up logging, but I dont think it logs any failed wireless access attempts. It can log a variety of other things, though, but mostly normal firewall kinds of things like port scans. Unless you're in a particularly high risk...

HELP Building a Small Business Network w/ VLAN

It sounds like VLAN'ing and QoS isn't necessary, or relevant for that matter. With only a handful of clients, both VOIP and PC, you generally dont need QoS and VLAN's. And like Tim says, be careful about how many DHCP servers you have running on the network. I've done a fair amount of VOIP...

HELP Building a Small Business Network w/ VLAN

You're on the right track it seems. For this sort of thing, you would want a router that supports VLAN'ing, QoS, etc. A good 'small-business' grade router that supports these sorts of features would be something like a Linksys RV0 type router. Tim's got a good article on the site about setting...

    Notebook / netbook articles

I think it would be interesting to take a netbook or two and discover how suitable they could be as a NAS or general network appliance. Throw in a USB or PCMCIA NIC and one of those things would make for a pretty cool router. I think it would be interesting to read about.

Difficult Routing Scenario - Point to Point to VPN Tunnel

My first advice is of course what you've tried, having a look at the routing tables to see where everything's wanting to go. I've worked with TZ-170's a fair bit, and I've never had issues routing across a VPN. Perhaps try completely deleting the VPN connection and re-establishing it. Office B...

    SSD Question

I was under the same assumption, this whole 'ReadyBoost' business was intended for USB Flash drives, not true SSD Hard drives. As for ReadyBoost itself, the general consensus is that it does seem to speed things up slightly, depending on the particulars of your system. The theory is that...

    Building a router/firewall

I personally like pfSense for it's superior feature set, small foot-print, and good ease of use. You can throw it in pretty much anything and it runs. Monowall is similar, but more geared towards towards small imbedded hardware. I hear Untangle is good, but more geared as a business/UTM...

Need to buy used Cisco Equip.

Hey, I'm finally challenging my CCNA/P exams after years of putting it off. I know of a couple good books that come with decent network sim programs. However, in the long term I'd ideally like to get a nice collection of some used or old cisco equipment to bash around on both for general...

unable to see xp computer on network from vista comp

Personally, I avoid Vista and XP's network "browsing" capabilities like the plague. Whenever possible, I go right to the machine via. the ip address (i.e. start - run - \\192.168.1.140). f the XP machine is acting as a server of sorts, it should probably have a static address anyway, making an...

    Has Networking Lost Its Mojo?

I would agree, to an extent, that home networking has been a little boring as of late. Wireless routers are standard, NAS's are commonplace, streaming is no longer a task. Personally, I never find myself bored with networking, especially the more I delve into my Cisco curriculum (CCNA/CCNP)...

    Mini-ITX NAS build

Something small ;). Generally, the more you spend on RAID cards, the more features, processing power, and RAM you get, amongst other things. I dont usually deal with too many RAID cards outside of standard HP e series and Dell Perc controllers, so I can't recommend too much specifically. Adaptec...

Question on Lightning Protection for Networks

NIC's LED lights can vary from NIC to NIC. Most commonly there's 2 main lights, Connection, and activity. Connection will be lit all the time usually (some will flash or go amber for different types of connections, i.e. 10/000 vs. GigE). Activity lights will usually just flash repeatedly. It all...

Question on Lightning Protection for Networks

Power can travel through virtually any electrical circuit, which includes ethernet. If a strike fried your FIOS box, for example, that could travel through the ethernet network. Most higher end consumer power bars and UPS's have ports for Ethernet and RJ11 connections.

    Mini-ITX NAS build

It really would depend on a bazillion factors, but some good drives and a decent RAID 5 card I'm going to guesstimate that you'd be able to get between 90 and 130MB/s sustained write. On an HP E200i controller (in a server) with a couple 750GB sata drives I was getting 125MB/s sustained write.

    Mini-ITX NAS build

To put it in perspective, most single hard drives are going to get around 60-75MB/s read/write these days, so to get those kinds of speeds right out fo the gate with RAID 1 on a NAS is pretty good. WD Raptors, the fasted consumer drives, can get around 70-85MB/s sustained write. Using onboard...

Wireless Setup for Bed and Breakfast

I haven't seen a laptop in the past 4 or 5 years that doesn't support WPA. Virtually any new'ish laptop that's reasonably up to date should support WPA without issue. Nowadays I doubt you'd see many laptops come through that dont support WPA. Heck, XP SP3 adds native WPA2 support now. (But...

Wireless Setup for Bed and Breakfast

Tim's advice is spot on. To add, you could also go a little higher end if you choose and get a proper Wireless Distribution system controlled by a central control unit. D-Link, for example, sells these kinds of units. They're not typically cheap compared to a couple access points (usually...

    Mini-ITX NAS build

No, I dont think it'll be worth it. GigE already supports 125MB/s, you would need to be running some really fast drives under a really fast RAID card to be getting over 100MB/s out of your NAS. Read this site's 'Fast NAS' articles - they'll provide some good insight as to the realistic issues...

    media network

If you're going wired, there's no need to match brands at all. If you're going wireless, you also don't have to, but several tests on SNB do show that to achieve greatest speed with a lot of wireless products, product matching is a good idea.

One router that does it all

That box looks about right. It says it's ADSL2+ compatible, which not all ISP's are using yet. You might just want to make sure it's backwards compatible with plain jane ADSL. I'm no expert on ADSL standards though, maybe 2+ gear is inherently compatible with vanilla DSL. Not sure there...
