    VPN recommendation

You should be good to go with either of the products your looking at. The RV series is a bit more of a business grade unit, and as such might be a bit of a better choice, especially factoring in QoS (see below). But either should do. Besides their VPN capabilties, they act as a normal router...

    VPN recommendation

Welcome to the forums. Lots of ways to do VPN's. Essentially, you just need hardware or software at each end of the equation that can establish a VPN session/tunnel to the other end. You say it's not a typical client/server environment, and you need something fairly self-contained. You're...

How to setup wireless separate from the main LAN at home?

Using something like WPA2 with a really strong key is near impossible to crack by any reasonable means. Specifically, read this [Smallnetbuilder]. Personally, I use long, randomly generated strings of characters. The only downside to this is it's a pain to have to remember or input. As such, I...

Need advice which Router/AP I should use (newbe)

The setup wizards will rarely ever help you with anything more than the basics. Turning your Netgear into an AP would work just fine, and it's pretty easy to do. I haven't run a netgear for a while, but the process is pretty much the same across any router. You essentially just need to log into...

Need advice which Router/AP I should use (newbe)

Since you're simply adding wireless, an AP will do, as well as virtually any wireless router can also be turned into an access point/AP very easily. For a regular Access Point, some models would be TrendNet TPL110AP (about $50) , D-Link DWLG700-AP ($85), or DLink DWL-7100AP ($150). Google...

How To Build a Really Fast NAS - Part 2: Shaking Down the Testbed

The FastNAS series is looking great, keep up the great work Tim! One question: Might it be prudent to get a baseline drive performance test before testing I/O on the network (i.e. run HDTach). Just thought it might be a good place to start to know where the drive performance is sitting. But...

Suggestions on home VOIP Provider and hardware?

It sounds like you're just doing PC to PC calling / chat, so a relatively simple chat or IM program would work fine for that. In a few scenarios I've used Skype and it works really well. Individual students would need to sign up for their own accounts, so the deployment isn't ideal, but it would...

    Web Managed Switch

Another vote for a ProCurve. Lifetime warranty, solid swtiches, no frills interface. And warranty replacement should nit be necessary is not a giant pain in the butt. A couple times I've had some go wonkers on me and i usually had a replacement at my door in 2 business days.

    Best codec for ripping/archiving DVD's?

I fiddled with handbrake and my PS3 a lot last night. Man, they don't like each other. Only when I encoded a clip with the specific PS3 settings did it play, otherwise the PS3 wouldn't read the file. Wierd. Frustrating. At first, I thought it was an issue with the media server, but both Tversity...

Best DraftN wireless router available? (video streaming)

As Tim will no doubt remind you, even wireless N is not ideal for streaming HD. He has a good article on it a while back and noted that you have to have pretty ideal conditions for it to work well. I've tried streaming HD over wireless on a few occasions, and I've never had spectacular results...

    Best codec for ripping/archiving DVD's?

Yep, I headed on over there to get some answers, amongst a few other places. Everyone has their opinion though, AVS is definately geared towards a particular crowd. It does indeed appear that H.264 is the way to go. It seems as though it's pretty much the standard right now (it was...

    Best codec for ripping/archiving DVD's?

So, on the weekend I finally got the network at my new home running. I'm using an Athlon64 3200 machine with 2 RAID'd 1TB drives as a NAS of sorts (running XP Pro). I used to have an XP MediaCenter, so I'd rip DVD's to the hard drive in straight VOB format (DVD Shrink) and they'd play without...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

+1. That pretty much sums it up. I'd recommend sticking to IP's whenever possible. In a home network scenario, it's pretty much just as easy to remember 4 or 5 IP's as opposed to the baggage that comes with MS's network browsing. Come up with a semi-logical adressing scheme and it's even...

    Remote access to NAS

With good passwords PPTP would be sufficient I would think. Personally, I say go for monowall/pfsense. Sure, they're a little overkill for most people but if you have a spare PC lying about and a couple NIC's, you can add a lot of functionality. I was personally never a huge fan of the...

    DIR-655: Wireless setup question

Look in the dictionary under 'Pain' and you'll see 'browsing windows machines and workgroups in windows explorer'. I would clear all machines out and have windows re-discover the workgroup. Providing all of the machines are in the same workgroup, same subnet (10.68.0.X/8) you should be fine...

    DIR-655 User interface

I didn't find the interface all that bad on my 655. It's not THE best I've seen, but it's definately useable. Maybe it's just because I'm used to Linksys - I think they've got it spot on.

16-port gigabit with POE and fanless

Same here. I tried to look for one a year ago for a customer for a one-off job and couldn't find one. Most PoE switches I've dealt with draw a fair bit of power, obviously, thus I think it would be hard to find a fanless one.

    Snom m3 issues

Your best bet would be getting some logs from the server and posting them online on the TB forums. I never dealt with snom myself though. Not entirely sure where the current logs are stored with asterisk, but that's easy enough to find. My guess is it's something funky with the snom gateway...

    Snom m3 issues

Hmmm, that's an odd one. I've done a lot of work with asterisk so I'll take a shot... So it's the handset itself that displays a missed call? I'm assuming so, in which case I dont so much think that's an issue with Asterisk, as much as the handset. Asterisk doesn't normally pass on...

    PS3 - (Most) Perfect HTPC?

You're right, PC support for proper HDMI Audio is still lacking. There are, however, some products coming out that are supposed to help/fix this (Asus Xonar AV1 sound card - basically a pass through card which you plug your HDMI video into from your video card and it will properly encorporate...
