Great OPNsense/pfSense mini PC with 4 x 2.5gb Intel NICs for just over $200usd on Amazon

The NICs on that board are v3. No drops. We get 1.4GB down from Comcrap, and we get the full speed thru that box to the machines behind it running the speed tests. No issues.....

Amazon discount on 2 pack of ASUS ET8 (6E plus 2.5gb port) including $35 coupon for less than $300

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0979Q7F69/?tag=snbforums-20 These seem good for wired APs, but not so much for wireless backhaul.

Great OPNsense/pfSense mini PC with 4 x 2.5gb Intel NICs for just over $200usd on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B28S16HK/?tag=snbforums-20 Add in 8gb ram (16gb if running an IDS) plus 64gb mSATA for about $30 and you've got a great firewall appliance for half the cost of Firewalla, Netgate, etc. I've seen other brands with the same board, CPU and Intel NICs for $300+. I picked...

Google Nest WiFi 2 pack - Amazon - $100 USD

I have a used, but great condition, 3 pack of these I'd be willing to unload for the same $100. PM me if interested. US only. I powered mine up for 6 whole seconds, but shut em down when "Hey Google" was not able to answer the question "Why is my wife a dingbat?" (Alexa nailed it).

    GT-AX6000 Help

Have you seen these 2 Dong Knows blogs re: best settings on ASUS routers? Made a huge improvement in the connection performance of my gt-ax6000s: https://dongknows.com/how-to-fix-wi-fi-dropping-and-disconnection-issues/ https://dongknows.com/home-wi-fi-settings-explained-and-best-tips/

    Replace Dropbear SSH with OpenSSH.

I was considering it given dropbear doesn't support sftp/scp, but the resource footprint of OpenSSH vs Dropbear is significantly larger so decided against.

    GT-AX6000 Help

If you have wifi 6 clients and want wifi speeds significantly greater than 1gps, then trade in the 6000 for something AXE capable that can broadcast on the 6GHZ band. The 5GHZ band generally sucks thanks to radar restrictions.

Observations on switching from RT-AC86U to GT-AX6000

I've been using this model for 6 or 7 months and haven't noticed any range difference between low and high 5ghz channels. Temperatures IMO are too hot for good longevity of the silicon, but that is not specific to the 6000. Also I'm not sure if heat causes the cpu to downclock or not. Sorry I...

    upgrade from RT-AX86U to GT-AX6000?

That's the setup OP mentioned he had. It was working for me between my 6000 and former rt-ax86s. Funny thing is I couldn't get AiMesh to work between 2 gt-ax6000s with just one cable no matter what I tried. Anyhow, if you don't mind, my suggestion to OP was kinda tongue-in-cheek, and this is...

    upgrade from RT-AX86U to GT-AX6000?

No the OPNsense just needs random vlan interface(s) defined on the port the primary mesh node is attached to in order to add additional subnets assuming he'll be bridging his physical interfaces with his primary subnet IP. BSD is kinda sucky/primitive vs Linux in that you can't bridge vlan...

    upgrade from RT-AX86U to GT-AX6000?

If it's only one then OP can just enable it in the GUI of his primary mesh node then take the 192.168.101.X and/or 192.168.102.X and configure the gateway IP interface as a vlan to match in the Opnsense GUI. No scripting really needed unless he needs more than one GN on all mesh nodes. He would...

    upgrade from RT-AX86U to GT-AX6000?

If you want something new, for less than the cost of the discounted gt-ax6000 you can get a barebones x86 firewall appliance from Amazon with 4 x 2.5gb ports that have independent (not switched) intel NICs for superior throughput vs any consumer grade router. Add in 8gb ram and 64gb mSATA and...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 388.2 is now available for select models

Not sure if it's related to the arp issue I've seen in other posts but after the upgrade my dual gt-ax6000s could not be on the same subnet without bringing everything down. If I pinged both at the same time while one responds the other times out and visa versa about every ten pings or so. I...

    GT-AX6000 User's Manual Now Available

I 'enjoyed' the part that said "always upgrade to the LATEST firmware".

GT-AX6000 question or problem not sure

I have 2 of those dead spiders. We pay for the 1.2gb down plan from comcast and Ookla speed test almost always makes it to my mac at 1.45gb. The router should not be the bottleneck assuming you didn't get a dud. Have you tried hooking a PC directly to your modem and run a speed test without the...

News Unreleased Pro models and just announced ExpertWiFi models native VLAN support

The one thing about native vlan support missing from all versions of ASUS hardware to date is vlan filtering support in the kernel. If ASUS had filtering support like OpenWRT, there would not be the need to create and configure multiple bridges to enable multiple vlan IP addressing, and vlan...

    Asus RT-AX86U devices disconnecting

WifiMan shows % of channel utilization and has a much clearer saturation graph then that pic. Also, how are you going to walk around your house holding a router? Long extension cord? The whole point of using a -weak- mobile device is to emulate what all the other weak clients and IoT devices see...

    I'm new - router recommendations?

The AX88U Pro is currently $350 and the AX6000 $260 USD on Amazon. Looks like they're giving the dead spiders the better discounts.
