Cheapest AC Router that support Merlin / Tomato?

Or using Broadcom Chipset so i get more third party options. It doesn't seems Router pricing has gone down. They stays the same and get replaced by newer variants which uses either Mediatek or Qualcomm, both lacking third party options. The ASUS AC56U was the best I could before, but that has...

Re: Is $500 The New $300 For Routers?

Just What is happening to the NAS and Router Market is beyond me. But I think it is also this large sum of potential money that is driving the market. I am still hoping 802.11ax and the 60Ghz wireless tech would come faster.

[Article] - Is MU-MIMO Ready For Prime Time?

    1. You need at least two MU-MIMO devices to get any benefit from MU-MIMO Why? What happen if I have a One MU-MIMO devices and 1/2 Non MU-MIMO devices? Would the router just turns lowest common and uses SU-MIMO for all devices? 2. MU-MIMO works only for downlink data (moving from router to...

    Why 2.5 / 5Gbps Ethernet? And Not 10Gbps?

Thx I think this pretty much answer my question. The reason is cabling, or specifically cabling Type. Speed. Or the Lack of thereof. Basically Wireless Speed and Devices has improved and replaced at a much quicker rate we are now / going to be bottle necked by our wired connection. We...

    Why 2.5 / 5Gbps Ethernet? And Not 10Gbps?

I know there was a cost reason to go with 2.5 / 5 Gbps Ethernet. But is there any reason why we can not bring the cost of 10Gbps Ethernet Controller down?

    Router or AP for SME

I am trying to source Router and AP for our company, office with 80 people in 3500 Square Feet. That is ~90 Wired Connections, and a potential of 100 Wireless Users with Phone, Tablet and Laptop. My first question is how do SME / Enterprise Router works? Brands like Ubnt, Aruba or Rackus...

Can we flash Merlin into the RT-AC56S?

Yes, they are selling this to Hong Kong as well as many other Asian Market... for nearly the same price. It would be great if something could be done. ASUS refused the return and as a long time ASUS Router user i am very disappointed. We cant even buy the AC56U anymore. They would however allow...

    DS214se Vs DS212J/13J

Unless the retail price of DS214SE is going to be even lower then $160. I bought my 212J nearly two years ago at price of around $180. And to me it will offer everything the 214se does and still faster, ( More Ram, Faster Processor ). Why would anyone want a 214se then?

Here are full specs of DS214, DS214+, DS214se and DS214play

    Apple AirPort Extreme (802.11ac) Reviewed

It does have the highest amount of memory in consumer router, right? So to me Apple hasn't been putting much attention into the software side of things. I wonder if the OS of Router are developed by Broadcom with source where their clients, ( Apple, D-Link, ASUS , etc ) development there own...

    Wireless Speed

So do LTE has less overhead? I was testing the newest and latest LTE CAT 4 in shops, possibly one of the best scenario since they have in shop mobile antenna. In a theoretical 150Mbps , the phone / USB were both getting close to 130Mbps download speed. That is less then 20% overhead.

    Wireless Speed

What i am thinking is like, If my laptop is directly infront of the router, positioned perfectly so both antenna are in line of sight or in best performance scenario, i will still not get 50% of max speed. Hence in best case scenario there will still be a 50% overhead? Just wondering.

    Wireless Speed

The first thing i notice ASUS AC66U review actually shows up to 500Mbps throughput during the review. But when i look it up in the Router Chart, the Maximum was only 3xx Mbps. Am i missing something? Also why each generation are we further away from the theoretical maximum speed? I know there...

How To Build A Cheap Petabyte Server: Take Three

Speaking of HDD, anyone know where HDD is going next? In All Previous generation a major, known successors has been proved to work and pretty much allow a smooth migration path. It seems we have pushed PP Recording to limit and yet HAMR nor Bit Pattern are Ready. Where are the 5TB or 6TB Drives?

    2013 generation of Synology NASes

Why Back to PowerPC While the review for 413+ and 213+ are great. I wonder why Synology are back to PowerPC instead of ARM. So now they have to support 3 different type of ISA, PowerPC, ARM and x86. I was under the impression someday Intel Atom will be cheap enough to replace every NAS SoC...

A Beginner's Guide To WAN Acceleration

Not to be rude or anything. I try to tell the story there are world outside US which has Internet Speed FAR exceed 100Mbps WAN Port. Yes I do have a Gigabit Connection to my ISP. And i wasn't uploading to my ISP FTP server either. Or I am guessing the problem only matters if you are...

A Beginner's Guide To WAN Acceleration

I read the WAN Acceleration article and i couldn't understand it. a 40ms latency between me and the FTP server would means i drop my total throughput from 1Gbps Theoretical Max to 40Mbps? I am pretty sure i get many times higher then that when i upload or download from FTP with many times...

    PPTP VPN Server Performance Questions

I am getting the suspicious feeling that the PPTP VPN Server inside Synology NAS slows down after heavy usage. And restarting tends to bring back the snappiness. Do anyone else have similar findings?
