    Thecus N7700 Unleashed

    After looking at the pricing. It gets a real funny reason. Why would i spend 1099 on an NAS that has 5 times worst Performance / Value Ratio to a Self Build Computer? The Size is no longer tiny for NAS. It has a 300W power supply. Doesn't the more HDD space and more expensive for the NAS gets...

    Has Networking Lost Its Mojo?

    Well, for those who just started, they may be exciting. ( Like all things.... ) But as soons as you ran into limitation ( like us old peeps ) and have been waiting YEARS for solution. I can understand why this topic started. Yes it is boring. Because It is slow. Gigabit ethernet is slow. At...

    Thecus N7700 Unleashed

    NICE! Interesting i think this is not based on Linux at all. ( FreeBSD ?? ) Since it has support for ZFS. Having seen how filesystem and software is the main bottleneck for transfer speed. I can wait to see how ZFS will fare. Since it has much better throughput, security and error correction...

    I am wondering if i could flash the firmware from Qnap 209 into LevelOne FNS-5000B ? Since they looks like just a rebadged product.

    Promise Comments: Quieting Down the Promise SmartStor NS4300N and NS4300N Review!

    Am i correct that the new with Variable Fan Speed Control NAS is 4300N. While the one without is 4300 without the "N" in the end. If they are both "4300N" Model, how could i tell which one is new version and which one is not. The place i live in all have blue box and no red as mentioned...

    QNAP adds 5-bay SMB NAS

    But by looking at all the test it seems CPU IS the main factor for performance. X86 is much cheaper and software are more widely available. I am still hoping to see the new SoC from Intel or Intel Atom being used in NAS.

    Ways to test your NAS full power?

    If we put an SSD that output faster then 100Mb/s ( the maximum of Gigabit Ethernet) inside an NAS, shouldn't we have the results of the maximum transfer speed possible from your NAS?

    Promise Comments: Quieting Down the Promise SmartStor NS4300N and NS4300N Review!

    Nice i cant wait for your Next Gen NAS. If CPU really is the bottlneck then i can see Dual Core Atom will solve this problem is the near future.

    WHS Power Pack 1 - Retest?

    NICE!. Thanks thiggins. I hope the article finally answer many questions i had in my mind. I get disappointed every time i look at your chart. Most of the NAS doesn't even achieve 50% of Gigabit Ethernet theoretical potential. Hopefully the new WHS will put them all to shame.

    WHS Power Pack 1 - Retest?

    They say File transfer speed and I/O improvement. Will see a retest or review of other WHS products?

    NAS = High Margin?

    HP 's WHS? That is an high performance NAS using standard PC component. Although not using open source OS. D-Links DNS 323 and 321, 2 years later and we have virtually the same NAS with less function for less price. ( And admittedly slower performance as well ).

    NAS = High Margin?

    It seems NAS are generally using Open Source OS and some cheap components. While the software may not be totally free. It still much cheaper then building or buying from Microsoft. The hardware are some very slow and small components. For the same price most of us could have built a 10 times...

    Comment and Forum linked up?

    I found it hard to follow things, when an article has a comment system which is not in anyway linked to the forum. So for one site you have two user interaction point. And questions will properly be asked twice.

    NAS Max Transfer Speed Questions.

    So the simple answer is that we have been living in marketing hype. 1TFlops from Geforce GTX? Quad Core Processor for $199? Insane amount of processing power that we must donate to research? 4GB of Ram for less then 80 USD. Gigabit Ethernet, IPv6 solving all of IP problems..... And yet we...

    NAS Max Transfer Speed Questions.

    Thanks for the graph it just shows that performance are really limited by Software as well. But if Linux and FreeBSD are already being used for much larger server. What is stopping them from performaing to their maximum. Since most current NAS are PowerPC / ARM based. Would that have an impact...
