looking for a smart router supports auto failover router between two WANs

Lab testing failover by pulling the Cat5 cable is often very different than the way your WAN connection drops in real world use. In the Youtube video he yanks the cable from each WAN port. This is a definitive way for the Draytek to determine WAN failure. What happens when the WAN port stays...

    Question about Cloud Station

Cloud Station is a poorly planned feature. Files are synced over the Internet unencrypted. No SSL wrapper, nothing. Pathetic and this shows how irresponsible Synology is and what they think of user data security. The lack of encryption during transit is not even listed on the limitations or...

Simultaneous Dual Band Business Class AP

I've worked in offices with Apple Airport Extreme's that seems to do OK in business environments. POE is an option with one of the POE aftermarket kits. At least one kit does POE and maintains GigE. I have not installed them, but seen them in real world use and they seem to work OK. I don't...

NETGEAR Antes Up With Its Draft 802.11ac Router

You may want to check this so you know what you're walking into with the R6300. Seems Netgear shipped it with beta firmware missing features and arguably with not so great radio performance. http://forum1.netgear.com/forumdisplay.php?f=126 Why do they do such things? Hold it back until it...

Draft 802.11ac Revealed! Buffalo WZR-D1800H AirStation Reviewed

Tim Thanks for the Part 2 update. Not surprising results, though I have a few comments. 1) I opened the 2.4 and 5Ghz comparison charts and it seems the unit comparisons were run with different clients/drivers. This can certainly throw off the results and leaves as many questions as...

Router decision for 3 story, double brick, extra thick cement floors

Take a look @ the coax in your house. See if it says RG6 or CATV6. That's what you want. If it says RG59 that's old school for off air viewing only. Too much loss will occur at high frequencies with RG59 at lengths longer than a few feet. Are your coax cables home run or is it a loop system...

Auto Negotiaiton fails, related to cable?

Cable is not terminated correctly. Most likely one pair is backwards on one end. Get a cable continuity tester (Home Depot sells them) and it will quickly tell you what is incorrect. Note, in wall cable is 99% of time solid core. The majority of RJ45 plugs are designed to be used with...

Router decision for 3 story, double brick, extra thick cement floors

You (your father) sure are now paying the price for not at least minimally cabling the house when built. With no coax do you have rabbit ears on your tv's? Eeek! Regarding high gain antennas, consider WiFi is a 2 way link. You need high gain at both ends. Not something feasible on tablets...

Router decision for 3 story, double brick, extra thick cement floors

OP says he has concrete floors. Hammer drilling a clean through hole will be a challenge in most 3000 psi+ floors. Usually best to core drill and that requires a concrete cutting service and about $300 per hole.

Router decision for 3 story, double brick, extra thick cement floors

Yup, drill holes. Use exterior grade cable or preferrably run in PVC conduit. Be sure to create a drip loop, seal holes with foam, exterior grade caulk, etc.. Strap PVC to wall and paint color of house. Some people actually go as far as to stucco over the pipe to blend it in better. BTW...

access home network via VPN... here's my equipment so far what else do I do?

Connect WRVS4400 WAN port to cable modem. Connect one LAN port of WRVS to LAN port of E4200. Configure E4200 as Access Point. WRVS4400 supports IPSec VPN only. This means you need a client. Cisco offers a free QuickVPN IPSec app you can download through their support site. If QuickVPN...

    QNAP 459 Pro+? Synology DS412+? Or Thecus N4800?

Personally, I prefer eSata which allows the NAS to monitor disk SMART data. SMART isn't always so smart, but its surely better than nothing which is what you get over USB.

    Extending Network (DirectTV house)

You have single coax to each wall plate? Do you have phone wiring? Its usually Cat5e and hopefully each jack is a home run back to distribution point. If you have suitable phone wiring, and no more than two phone lines, you can turn the other two pairs of the Cat5e into a 10/100 network...

Which router? Netgear WNDR4500 vs Asus RT-N66U vs Linksys EA4500 vs E4200V2

I had exact opposite results. I have 2 x WNDR4500 and 2 x N66U I've been testing. In 3 different buildings compared, the WNDR4500 won both in overall range and throughput. Especially throughput at distance. the WNDR4500 runs 1.0.1.6 firmware. N66U has had a host of different firmware's...
