Newbie needs help with download speeds

The antennas radiate like a donut with the antenna in the middle. Directly above or below the antenna would be a dead zone. So a good reason to tilt one or more antenna would be to cover a second floor.

    most stable release before 378.50?

Yes, the install is same method for the fork version. The link for all releases is on first post. Right click on the release you want and download zip file with all the files. Unzip and load the trx file as usual.

Newbie needs help with download speeds

IMHO, on a N66U you should update to the fork 374.43 for the security fixes. It is a sticky in the asuswrt-Merlin form http://www.snbforums.com/threads/fork-update-for-374-43-available.18914/

    fstab - custom

Please do NOT ever use 7 as the last digit in chmod unless there is no other choice. That makes the file world write and negates any security obtained by running a task like dnsmasq as nobody. Use chmod 755 instead.

Did you notice the john9527's sticky fork for 374.43 which contains more current security fixes?

Config Guest Network on RT-N66u in AP Mode

Off topic since not separate IP subnet that OP wanted, but there is a partial solution to Guest isolation on Asus in AP mode. See http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showpost.php?p=166259&postcount=24 (That thread's topic was Guest Network: Not restricting local network access ) Note if...

    Disabling NAT on ASUS RT-AC87U

You are asking for router to router configuration to have separate networks. Did you tell the Sophos Home Firewall that the network (*.*.2.*) was behind the ASUS RT-AC87U? It would be something like defining a route in the configuration of Sophos pointing at the Asus on its (*.*.3.*) address...

Setting up Guest Network (Separate Subnet?)

I found a partial solution that may work for you. It limits the guest Wireless connections on the Asus AP to just access the AP and router (so USB devices connected to the router still accessible). From the wireless guests you cannot access any other wired devices on the local network...

Guest Network: Not restricting local network access.

Thanks. Works great to restrict access to wired LAN from AP wifi. Only change I made was at router= line to ensure MAC address in arp table. rtIPaddr=`nvram get lan_gateway` nslookup www.google.com $rtIPaddr # force a lookup to ensure arp table has router mac router=`arp -an $rtIPaddr`...

    IPv6 with SLAAC

I don't know a lot about IPV6 so someone please correct me if what I say is wrong. I believe that SLAAC assigns one IP address at a time, so is good for client machines. DHCPV6 can assign either a single IP or a PREFIX (subnet in ipv4 world). Since IPV6 does not use NAT, a router would...

kernel: br0: received packet on eth1 with own address as source address

The rules should be in firewall-start, this is where you will usually put your own custom rules for the filter table. However to debug do the following. 1) Run the script from the command line with debugging turned on. I usually put the script in the file <script name>.sh so if I do something...

    [How-To] Link Aggregation/LACP on RT-AC68U/W/R/P

Actually, if the generated tables place rules before the established state, you could assume they are required to be there for some reason. Anything that turns off hardware acceleration is likely needing to check each packet of a connection for something, so that check must come before the rule...

    [How-To] Link Aggregation/LACP on RT-AC68U/W/R/P

The rules are processed top down, so you want to reduce the number of rules tested. The RELATED,ESTABLISHED rule says allow existing connections, so near the top allows existing connections maximum performance. The INVALID rule checks packets for known bad packets that can cause trouble see...

    [How-To] Link Aggregation/LACP on RT-AC68U/W/R/P

OP, since you want this to be a how-to, please consider performance. The one that I see is that the in iptables, the rules with "RELATED,ESTABLISHED" and "INVALID" should be first if possible. Therefore your inserts should be at 3 or more. Thanks

    Wifi as WAN Setup

I think what you are asking is if Asus routers can be configured in WISP (wireless Internet service provider) mode. There was an article on WISP in PCWorld about a year ago. I don't know the answer for Asus, but have seen adverts about routers that do support it. I think that dd-wrt firmware...

Obtain address for br1 via DHCP

This is a work in progress... I cannot get the WiFi to work with security enabled, but crudely can get DHCP to work on br1. Anyway, here are my scripts. First file is /jffs/scripts/services-start The second file is /jffs/scripts/udhcpc_brX I have zipped them since the code tag...

RT-N66U: Access point mode, where to connect utp from parent router?

There is no technical difference between any of the 5 ports in AP mode. The only advantage of using the WAN port for the link is the labeling. The WAN port goes towards the Internet for both your router and the AP. You know that the LAN ports can be used for local machines, but might not...

kernel: br0: received packet on eth1 with own address as source address

If the messages are bothering you, it is easy to suppress the messages. # Definitely not from my own address(es) iptables -I INPUT 3 -i ! lo -s `nvram get lan_ipaddr` -j DROP iptables -I INPUT 3 -i ! lo -s `nvram get wan_ipaddr` -j DROP Should do the job.

DHCPNAK reporting "wrong network" sometimes? What is it?

Computers remember the last IP address they used. When they connect to a network, they ask if they can continue to use that address. The DHCP server will respond with a NAK (no) or ACK (yes). If you just connected a computer that was connected somewhere else (like work), then the message is...
