    N5550 rebuild issues

I'm looking for some input on the N5550 running RAID 5. I own 3 of these NAS units. I have been having nothing but bad experiences rebuilding an array when a drive fails. In the past year I lost some drives (Seagate 3TB which we know have a bad track record). My current drive that failed was...

4kb sectors and TheCus NAS drives

I just read an article where WD will be releasing drives that use 4kb sectors as opposed to 512b sectors. Apparently older OS's like XP and some Linux distros will have issues with this change. Any idea on where TheCus stands with this tech? Article here...

    Thecus N4100PRO

I upgraded the firmware today to 3.0.x. The web interface is AJAX based now, I don't see any biggies to it over the old interface. I did find they improved the email notification support, Gmail now works.

    Thecus N4100PRO

I tested my 4100Pro pulling a 1TB drive. All worked as it should. The speeds were very good with a missing drive. When I installed a new drive the rebuild worked as expected - no issues.

TheCus 4100 Pro vs Buffalo Linkstation Quad

I tested a rebuild on the 4100 to see what happens. It works very well. I pulled a working drive while the device was powered up and an external red LED that is not blocked by the cover glows and a loud alarm is also heard. The LCD display also displays 'degraded RAID'. I was very pleased to...

TheCus 4100 Pro vs Buffalo Linkstation Quad

I am still loading up the 4100 with some data. I have 2TB to copy to it. It's taking some time to get the data uploaded. Some simple file transfers are showing about the same speeds as the NAS charts show. I am getting 10meg/s on the Buffalo QUAD and 20meg/s on the 4100 writing data to a RAID...

TheCus 4100 Pro vs Buffalo Linkstation Quad

I bought a Linkstation Quad a couple of weeks ago. I have not been too impressed with it. I thought buying the Buffalo name would be a safe bet. I decided to buy another NAS - TheCus 4100Pro and have both connected to my home network. I am going to post my opinions and results to hopefully...

NAS comparison - lack of info

Yeah they stressed the warranty non-sense to me also. Bad policy IMHO. It's a home product and should be considered more friendly to geeks wanting to play with it. After seeing where it falls on the benchmarks they did not do a great job. The web interface is also not very fast. I think the...

NAS comparison - lack of info

They don't say you can't do it either which is equally frustrating. But what they won't answer is what happens if you have RAID 5 and loose two drives? Will it still boot? My worry is if you really have a disaster and loose two drives there may be no way to revive the NAS except by buying...

NAS comparison - lack of info

They do not. I was told by Buffalo support the only way to use my own drives was the swap one at a time technique. The TFTP can install the boot but it does not offer a way to format the drive to their liking. There are many threads on their forum complaining about this.

NAS comparison - lack of info

Do the other brands at least offer a way to install the boot on bare drives?

NAS comparison - lack of info

I am not sure about the other brands but I would not recommend a Buffalo because they install the boot on the hard drives instead of flash ram. I recently bought a LS QUAD and wanted to use my own disks. Each drive had to be swapped one at a time and do a rebuild. When it was all done the...
