Streamlining FTP + NAS
Are you familiar with rsync? and cron? Also which nas are you using? are you able to use 'unrar' on it? -You can unrar them serverside and have them synced to your nas without a pc. -Or you can sync them to your nas and unrar them on your nas. I recommend the former since it should be...- bliko

Will the QNAP 509 handle bluray streams?
Pretty much all nas will be able to stream fast enough. Aslong as your ps3 can playback the format your media is encoded in; you will be fine. -

Have you tried the transmission bt client? - works like a charm on the dns-323 .... even with all its problems the dns-323 is an amazing unit... for its price it does more than enough. Anyway...45W is not exactly 'high' power usage ... so you might aswell just go for windows on ur kpc if that...- bliko

Did you by any chance look at the cpu load with and without qos? Also what's the memory usage like? Also take a look at: http://azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs Would be good to know if your isp is part of the problem. -

Mulling over options for Low-Power DIY NAS
You will also be 'horsed' if any of the other hardware component(s) fail... Going for raid 6/10 won't necisarily make your data much more secure. Do u plan to have a full backup of your data? Also are you looking for it to be silent? ;) -

Also make sure your isp doesn't throttle bt ;) I'm not sure abotu tomato, but dd-wrt will show u the router cpu usage...so may wana try that and see if your router cpu load is very high with bt. -

The fact that you are using 75% of your upstream bandwidth on adsl will slow down anything wan related considerably. I strongly suggest you limit the upload speed to about 40% of your REAL upstream throughput... I recommend 20KB/s (160Kbps). This should greately improve responsiveness, should... -

Packet Size
Thanks ;) Most packets sent over the wan interface are ~300-350B ... however it can vary depending on what kind of data is being transferred. In case of 300B packets throughput may drop to about 20% of what's stated since the packet processing rate will be fixed. I'm eyeing up the WRT610N...- bliko

Roughly how many connections are you openning when you run bittorrent? With most routers...qos should take care of your problems. However under extreme loads some may struggle. -

For 4 drives only, raid 5 will be sufficient. Raid 6 will only give u 2 usable drives - 50% space... If ur happy to use only half ur space... Raid 10 will be much more efficient... And the controller will be cheaper. Def go for 2gb...it's pretty cheap these days so will be fine if u only... -

Roughly how many people are going to be using the wireless network? Perhaps you may need more than one access point.... or perhaps more powerfull antenae... it really depends on the site. Dual-band is worth it...however you can only take advantage of it if your wireless clients support 5GHz...- bliko

Many distros such as dd-wrt run openvpn... however most routers are not really designed to run torrents. It would be better to run bittorent on your nas or server. I would recommend having a dedicated router for typical router roles and a server for server/pc roles. If you want the familiar...
