Windows 2008 box as home router?

I have the same question as valentin. Also are u running a home office? Or is it purely for home use? Running windows server in the home really doesn't have many benafits in real use scenarios... Just in testing... I personally run it as a VM. I would recommend against using it in a critical...

High performance switches - on a budget

Most web-managed switches have 4 Qos queues (levels) which should be sufficient for these purposes. 'Cisco' branded switches are generally expensive, however 'linksys' branded cisco switches are fairly reasonable.

There aren't any avatars to choose from and it doesnt let u upload your avatar  Usually there should be some avatars with radio buttons underneeth, an upload box beneeth? Perhaps you've disabled uploading of avatars and have not defined any premade ones?

High performance switches - on a budget

do u currently have 24 things to plug-in? if so id go for a 48-port switch which leaves some breathing space. A managed switch is likely to be overkill and will probably just add some un-needed complexity. Unmanaged switches however, dont usually come in sizes larger than 24-ports...

    NAS Suggestions

Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iscsi Seems you have some misconceptions about iScsi, appart from the fact that it's generally more expensive. '2X raid1 arrays in 2 nas' or 'raid1 array in 1 nas + esata hdd' protects your data in the event that any of the components in a nas fails, not...

    Draytek routers

I've been really impressed by draytek products...i'm too surprised that they're not popular in the us. If you have any questions about the 2820 series I may be able to answer them; since I've used a couple of these before.

    Looking for a NAS Solution

If you're not using existing drives just buy compatible ones. If you are using existing drives take a look at: http://www.synology.com/wiki/index.php/User_Reported_Compatible_Hard_Drives%2C_Extended_List#Samsung_HD103UJ.2C_1000GB.2C_SATAII Looks like the existing firmware sorts out hibernation...

    NAS Suggestions

I agree with tim unless you require alot of hdd space. Sorry to say it again, but please put some kind of backup solution in place, even if its just for critical files ... anyone who has lost important data will tell you the cost of an external hdd is nothing compared to the cost of data loss...

    Looking for a NAS Solution

Do you mean: should you replace your modem router with a gigabit one, or buy a gigabit switch? -If that's the question; then I'd buy a gigabit switch since it's slightly more flexible. You will have more ports + when you need to change your modem/router (i.e. for isp change) it's less hassle...

    My new home LAN. Suggestion?

Since management of the switch is not needed the SD2008 will be fine.

    NAS for small Business

What tim means is; other server components may fail and make your data unavailable i.e. Psu, raid controller, nic, both hdds... So a backup is essential. A USB or esata hdd is generally suitable for soho purposes. Unless your data is highly sensetive, extra protection shouldn't be that...

    My new home LAN. Suggestion?

Cheap IP camera = Panasonic BL-C1 ... it does the job however the fps is low and you won't have much luck identifying anyone in the dark lol. For media playback you shoul not be looking at a nas. A good media playback device is...

    NAS for small Business

He has considered backup, however i would like to add that a replacement nas is a better backup than ext hdd: if the first nas goes down u can simply replace it with the second. Aswell as backing up your data remember to backup your config files.

    My new home LAN. Suggestion?

I believe the WRT610n requires an external modem. Also if you do decide to go with the router, be sure to check out the dd-wrt firmware: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_DD-WRT%3F#File_Versions Your choice of UPS should be fine, however if you also intend to connect your nas to it...

What's the Fastest I can get out of this Equipment

The PCI bus will present an overall bottleneck to the network, the USB drives will max at 30MB/sec. As mentioned before I think you can expect ~50MB/sec from those internal drives. Since you're expecting a low number of connections and relatively low io which os shouldn't make too much...

    NAS for small Business

I'm guessing capacity will not be such an issue for you guys, however I think you will be after a fair bit of speed if your going to be storing graphic files. I would recommend the Synology DS-207: http://synology.com/enu/products/DS207/index.php In my experience it works fairly well in your...

    My new home LAN. Suggestion?

For situations like this an unmanaged switch is usually simpler + cheaper. UPS is a good idea. If your router supports port based vlan (many cheap routers do these days), you can separate the upstairs network from the downstairs by connecting the upstairs switch to a different router port.
