What features/functions are lost when converting to "AP mode" ?

That's exactly what I've tried this morning briefly before starting to work (can't interrupt the network once I start). And it didn't work ... AC68U's clients didn't get IP addresses in the firewall's IP range (using its DHCP server) while of course the WAN side of the AC68U kept doing it and...

What features/functions are lost when converting to "AP mode" ?

Thanks, that's enough to make me wonder if there's a way to accomplish the same result (let my main firewall/router handle NAT, DNS and DHCP) while still keeping the RT-AC68U in router mode.

What features/functions are lost when converting to "AP mode" ?

I've recently started to experiment with pure firewalls in my home network (Watchguard, ZyXEL, etc), and I'm hence pondering the idea of converting the role of my RT-AC68U from router to "AP mode". It's though not clear to me what do I lose in terms of functionality in doing it. In my current...

Going to buy ASUS RT-AC68U & RT-N66U & Need Advice...

I know this is an old thread, by I landed here as I was looking for clarifications about using my AC68U as an AP today (and it was helpful enough so far). And I know it's OT w.r.t the thread's title, but just for those doing my same experience, concerning the argument about "why don't remove...

RT-AC68U: lowering the wireless TX power

Hi get your point Jim, however I'd like to be in control of how low I want it to be ...

RT-AC68U: lowering the wireless TX power

Thanks to both. Are you running Merlin ? I forgot to mention I do, and last time I made a test, the slider was irrelevant. I kept it set to 5%, but nothing seemed to change w.r.t. 100% and it was indeed a known issue. Did you verify the opposite ? If so, can you please share your current...

RT-AC68U: lowering the wireless TX power

Hi, just to check whether there's been any recent update about any possible way (whatever relative new firmware/distro/fork) to make the Wireless TX power slider on the web gui real and work (it actually is simply irrelevant, tx power stays the same whatever value is set). My intent is to...

    remove nobind

And, of course, it worked. Thanks a lot Eric. Peppe

    remove nobind

Thanks a lot Eric, I'm already working and can't close terminals and clients to start/stop the vpn. I'll certainly give it try when I'm done tonight. Peppe

    remove nobind

Just a small up to check whether there currently is any solution other than recompile the fw to set an lport on the client (which keep going in conflict with the pre-build nobind option I can't spot where to remove it from). Thanks Peppe

VLAN tags out of the WAN interface

My hope is that the ports (or at least WAN) are of the third type (general or hybrid) that can work both as an access and as a trunk port, or can be made so.

VLAN tags out of the WAN interface

That's what I was hoping and looking for on the packet captures. But even understanding that I'm looking for the wrong thing, that I'm setting the config wrong or that no tags will ever come out of the WAN (I'd be surprised though) would be of help.

VLAN tags out of the WAN interface

I'm trying myself too to separate traffic on my RT-AC68U (running Merlin 378.50) between "everything" and guest WLAN. I just got a used ZyWall to put in front of the Asus, so the first thing I'm trying to understand is whether I can read the VLAN tags out of the Asus' WAN interface (connected...

Anyone successfully using snort on AC68U or similar ?

I've collected ICMP packets all day log. Indeed, the vast majority of them are of type Destination Unreachable, while the minority is made by pairs of Echo Request and Reply. However, amongst the roughly couple of thousands of alerts (all ICMP tests), just one alert was not a test and seems to...

Anyone successfully using snort on AC68U or similar ?

Correct, I had not distinguished the type. I've just configured rules to distinguish iTypes and restarted snort. I'll collect alerts today and see what happens in more detail. Thanks again. Peppe

Anyone successfully using snort on AC68U or similar ?

Right Eric, indeed I had configured the ICMP rule to log traffic between the router and the modem/router (this is not configured in bridge, so I can manipulate traffic from it to AC68U as coming from the WAN). In the end logging came out, I had to correct the rule from a mistake and make it...

Anyone successfully using snort on AC68U or similar ?

Thank you as well. Checking as you suggest I get an empty result (i.e. the grep doesn't find what I asked for). I'm not knowledgeable enough (yet) to understand what the module you suggest to look for is. Having not found it, is that a problem indicator ? Any suggestion on how to overcome it ...

Anyone successfully using snort on AC68U or similar ?

Hi Eric, thanks for posting. I've checked and now remember, NAT acceleration was already disabled before I started with this all. Any other hint would be helpful. Peppe

Anyone successfully using snort on AC68U or similar ?

I've spent some hours yesterday on this issue. I've installed Entware on a dedicated USB stick (I tried with Optware first as this was already installed, but the snort package there was too old and couldn't find appropriate rules). The installed package "as is" needs several tweaks to...

AC68U: what are my options to "lower" the tx power ?

Hi John, I apologize for being so late in following up this thread, but in the past months I've had to redirect my attention. Right after your suggestion I mad some tests using Xirrus on a client laptop. I tried with both Merlin and fork (thanks for the script, I've hence used it and it's...
