Easy way to test Wi-Fi speed from RT-AX86U to a connected client?

I'd like to test the Wi-Fi link between my RT-AX86U router and a connected device, so I know what speed I can expect if I were to upgrade my internet connection. I know I can use iperf to test the speed between 2 devices, but that's tricky with where the router is, I can't hardwire anything to...

RT-AX86U doesn't switch back to DFS channel

Hm, I don't have the option to check DFS, if I select Auto I'm sure it will default to non-DFS. I have stock firmware, don't really want to change. :( And I have it set to 80/40/20, don't need 160 yet. Hm no, I'm using channel 100. I definitely don't want to use the non-DFS ones because there's...

RT-AX86U doesn't switch back to DFS channel

Typically, routers will switch back after a few hours or at a certain time of day. And of course it won't switch back if it's still detecting radar. I've tried waiting 2 days and it didn't switch. I suspect mine are false positives too, because it only happens once every 3 months and I am about...

RT-AX86U doesn't switch back to DFS channel

So I use a DFS channel with my RT-AX86U. Every few months, the router switches to a non-DFS channel, I guess it detected radar. But then it doesn't switch back, and I have to manually switch it back (by resetting it) after noticing the lower quality of the non-DFS channel, which where I am is...

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

I agree. The Seagate Expansion 16TB drive is literally an Exo Enterprise drive for less than half the price. However, maybe they are like B-stock or something, and also they have much more limited warranties. But still well worth it for home users. I was referring to the way Unraid handles...

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

Well I guess if you're doing a professional or enterprise deployment with drives that cost $500 each, then of course you'll go with specialized gear and ZFS, etc. But for a home setup, most people use shucked external drives, so dropping $500, $700 or $1000 on a NAS just makes no sense. Yes, so...

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

Well I disagree. I don't get any less peace of mind with Unraid. It uses 1 or 2 parity drives to protect 1 or 2 data drive failures, the rest of the drives are utilized fully and the data is not striped. Unraid can use VMs, transcoding, etc. so that's where the extra performance can be used...

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

But it's literally 6 times more expensive. Unraid is very good and offers everything I need, in many ways more flexible than the Synology. I prefer the way Unraid stores data to the traditional RAID options. Also, the hardware in the $90 Optiplex is much more powerful than the Synology...

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

I know, but I wanted SATA and the price was very good. With Intel SpeedStep and C-States I think I can get the idle power consumption (excluding drives) to be within 10W of the 4570T. Unraid can only boot from a USB stick, but it immediately gets loaded into RAM, so it doesn't really matter.

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

Wow, I just bought a Dell Optiplex 3020 SFF PC with a Core i5 4590, 8GB DDR3 and a 500GB HDD, and a full license of Win 10 Pro for... $90 shipped. That's unbelievable. I wasn't planning on buying it but I bid on it fully expecting be outbid and I won. It's total overkill for a NAS, I mean with a...

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

That's a good option. Or an old Ivy Bridge or Haswell Dell Optiplex, you can get them for under $100 on Ebay. What OS are you running? I am thinking about using Unraid. And is there an issue with the drives being connected via USB vs. SATA, does that present any challenges?

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

Hm well I do have Pi3, but it only has a 100 mbps port, so that's no good. I have an old case and PSU, I could put together a $200 PC and run Unraid... Or maybe I'll just plug the external drives into my PC and forget about, it's always on anyway. Spending $500 on a Synology NAS is just too...

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

I see. Well I'll try it, hopefully this doesn't happen. The AX86U has beefier specs. I mean the easiest thing is to say get a NAS, but they're pricey.

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

Why not? The alternative is to connect it directly to my PC, but then it gets pinged a lot by random processes and spins up when I don't need it to. I don't need it to be fast, I don't need it in RAID, why do I need a dedicated NAS? They're expensive.

RT-AX86U -- can I use a USB 3.0 hub to connect multiple external HDDs?

Hello. The title says it all. The router comes with two USB 3.0 ports, but I have 3 Seagate Expansion drives and I'm wondering if I can use a USB 3.0 hub to connect them all. I've read that on some Asus routers, if you use a hub, the spec drops to USB 2.0 which wouldn't be good. Can anyone...

RT-AX86U: Adaptive QoS manual bandwidth limiting doesn't work

It's kind of amazing that they would leave such a major feature broken on their top tier routers. And if you check "automatic" bandwidth limiting, it doesn't seem to do anything either. The instructions are incorrect too, it says that traditional is supposed to let you manually select priority...

RT-AX86U: Adaptive QoS manual bandwidth limiting doesn't work

I don't know much about QoS, I enabled it try to minimize my bufferbloat. With traditional QoS, whatever bandwidth limits I set get implemented (and bufferbloat improves a little, but not much... it's not that bad to begin with). But if I enable adaptive QoS and click on "manual setting" and...

AIMesh node connects on 2.4 GHz backhaul unless "Ethernet priority" selected

I didn't reboot the node, I probably should. There's no way to do that unless you disconnect it, physically push the button, or use the app. For now I'll keep it on Ethernet priority, I just thought it was a really weird thing. It's channel 100, but I don't have DFS interference here, 80 MHz.

AIMesh node connects on 2.4 GHz backhaul unless "Ethernet priority" selected

A weird thing started happening with my DSL-AC68U AIMesh node. I rebooted my main router (RT-AX86U) and then the node connected to it on 2.4 GHz. It always connected on 5 GHz before and has great 5 GHz reception. So I thought it'll adjust on its own and reconnect on 5 GHz. Checked a day later...
